Slow Cooker

Yeah I'd probably go with that one. Have you considered a pressure cooker though? I think they might be more energy efficient and they take a lot less time to cook things.

I would prefer a pressure cooker (I love mine), but it also depends on how you cook.

A slow cooker would be great if you wanted to do the prep work in the morning, leave it on the whole day, and come home to an extremely tender lamb shank. Or pot roast beef, or whatever. A pressure cooker could get you the same results, but because it is so much faster, you would do only do the prep and cooking on the night that you eat.

Also a pressure cooker is a little more fidgety - you cant just open it and have a look. And when cooking a stew that includes veggies, you need to let the meat cook first (say for at least an hour) and then add the veggies. Otherwise the veggies will turn to mush.

So, the slow cooker is more, "put it on and forget", whereas the pressure cooker is just, "cook the same thing but really really fast, with probably more effort."

I think buy whatever suits your style of cooking.

I see the pressure cookers are much more expensive too. I doubt i'll use either more than 2-3 times a month.

Probably not worth it to buy a pressure cooker then. My brother has a slow cooker and loves it.

They are awesome. Do the "prep work" while making lunch.

Just buy both then you will know which one you need :D
BTW i have both and a rice cooker and use all three at different times.
Buy the big one ,that way if you have guests it will be big enough and some times i freeze some food so if you come home tired just chuck the frozen food in the microwave.
I have this one http://www.takealot.com/home-kitchen/salton-6-l-slow-cooker,29659615

Your other option is to check out the 2nd hand shops - especially in January, when people are getting rid of their unwanted Christmas presents. Sometimes new, boxed stuff can be had for a big discount.

Even if it's not brand new, it will have at least 6 months' warranty and you can test it out to get an idea of how/if you'll actually use it. You can then look out for something better. :)

Got my SC yesterday. Am about to test it out... wish me luck. :P
