Slow HP LAPTOP

i agree, too many people just want to slap a ssd in it. format the damn thing and it'll be fast again.

No it won't. In no world can you say something with 4GB of RAM and a 5400rpm mechanical disk running Windows 10 will ever be fast.

In what world do you think a machine with an i3 and 4gigs of ram will take 10 minutes to boot?

It'll definitely be faster, my apologies for not mentioning that when i say it will be fast, i mean it will be fast relative to what it is. in the end its still an i3 with 4gigs of ram on a potential 5400rpm drive. but not 10 minutes to boot.

You can format that laptop until the cows come home and pigs fly.. it will be faster for the first few boots until you have installed your office and other applications and then the 5400rpm HDD will bottle neck the system again..

By no means should OP just slap a SSD in without doing his own research and due diligence.. let the OP monitor disk usage in perfmon and see if it is actually bottle necking the system and then he can buy the SSD.. my money is on a bottle necked HDD..

i disagree, a format and after loading all apps manage what starts with windows and it'll be fine. not fast by my standards but fast enough for its intended purpose.

But i'll agree to disagree.

So will I but, with this parting thought.. The OP specifically complained about start up time.. IF the HDD is a bottle neck, a SSD will drastically improve startup time..

Indeed, if i were lazy and wanted a quick fix a ssd would be it, clone the drive and bobs your uncle, my thoughts are if OP has an i3 maybe he/she can't afford an ssd. i like formatting my machine often. and i notice speed gains even with a ssd and 24gb of ram. my 10 old laptop is running win 10 just fine with a amd cpu comparable to a modern celeron and 4gb of ram, but windows is up in 1-2minutes. granted it is a 7200rpm drive. i just feel a format will make it faster to a point OP is happy with.

yeah, fast enough for what that machine was built for, light duty, browsing and document work.
Correct. Typical boot time for such hardware is 30-40 seconds. After one minute most of disk activity stops and applications can start faster. 10 minutes is extraordinary and indicate serious system malfunction.

As I said before, it is most likely auto-updating service crashing on the startup and problem do not stop, showing very high CPU usage and slow system response.

In this situation suggesting SSD to solve this problem looks to me a trolling.

Windows should not take that long to boot on a HDD unless there is something wrong. Got a g4400+4GB+old seagate 250MB and it boots in under 2mins.

Recently had a virus which Windows Defender found and quarantined.
Also ran Malwarebytes.
But laptop running very slow these days. Any help would be appreciated.
i5 CPU @ 2.50GHz, 6GB RAM (5.87GB usable)? 64 bit. 1 TB.
Windows 10
Task Manager:
Disc 57 -96% Memory 56% CPU 70%

Something is being used by your pc consistently but there is common bug in windows 10 of high disc usage. I know there are many problems https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/100-disk-usage-windows-10-fixed/.

You can also try "Go to power options, change to high performance and make sure plan settings are on default"

Without actually seeing the PC it would be hard to say but a format/reinstall should fix most problems unless there is a hardware fault which I would lean away from.

^This.

Most likely there are multiple instances of Windows Update, Defender, MS 'Telemetry' auto updating themselves and crashing each other. High CPU/disk and a high Internet data usage will eventually stop, it can take a week. There are many bloggers/advisors, but no real resolution to the problem.

Increase RAM to 8Gb, and install an SSD.

Reinstall Windows from scratch.

I remember a few months ago my HP laptop was extremely slow, 3rd gen i7 laptop, upgraded RAM to 16gb, no change, reinstalled windows no change, later I took it to technician who cleaned out the cooling system, I later bought an SSD, installed windows on it, got a new 2tb secondary hdd and it's as good as new.

i strip and clean my 10 year old laptop once a year, also invest in a cheap ssd and a drive caddy, i use an old 64gb ssd still makes a HUGE difference. drive caddy for the existing hdd and learn how to use iso images indead of dvd rom. for those who can't afford a caddy+ssd learn how for format windows cause keeping the OS clean and fresh will be the single biggest thing you can do.
