Slow international traffic

Apart from mybroadband there has been very little coverage about this outage thus far, so the article is welcome and informative. Atomic's dashboard (there may be others..) is tracking the outage

If its a planned maintenance situation it isn't technically an outage. ISPs had time to turn up capacity elsewhere. Albeit not a major amount of time, there was still time to make alternative plans.

Yeah so Openserve are the wholesaler, they buy capacity on undersea cables, they sell said capacity to ISPs. IE if it's a Telkom customer they would buy from Openserve depending on their needs.

Where it gets tricky is that ISPs buy from Transit providers on a "protected" basis, but often dont manage the capacities accordingly.

Yeah they both use NTT and from what I understand the majority of NTTs traffic relies on WACs.

You'd think by being a large Japanese Multinational they'd not put all their eggs in one basket and have contingencies in place, their current performance is shockingly poor

I've had issues with NTT before as well... log a ticket with my ISP a while ago for UK latency, they were using NTT as their transit provider, but they had capacity issues... since the latency was just under 200ms, they said they would do nothing about it, I would have to just wait for NTT to increase their capacity on their routes.. so, yea, I'd prefer if ISPs could avoid NTT..

TIme for people with webafrica/mweb to start switching, I don't see these issues going away any time soon with NTT. I struggled with these issues with webafrica and switched ISP's, I'm happy now. I have many friends still with webafrica who are just complaining daily, I tell them to switch but they are afraid of the effort.

Is WACS back online earlier than expected?

The reports said 16 June, but SA NREN's link monitor map shows capacity through both their west coast cables online again, after both showed as offline last week.
One is SACS, and the other presumably WACS, or?
