Slow Internet Afrihost?

Okay, so since last month this issue escalated. Between 6pm and 10pm my line get throttled all a sudden, and my internet is so slow I can hardly do **** on it. I have been struggling more than a month now with Afrihost and Telkom but this issue still persists??

I am on a 4mb Business line with Afrihost and I never had these issues for the past 2 years. Now last month I noticed my Steam downloads being as slow as 7bytes per second. I can not even log into Overwatch servers or any gaming servers between 6pm-10pm.

Also, before or after those hours when my line is actually working as it should with 400+kbs/s, my latency is up with 30ms. For example, if I use to game at 56ms on South African Servers, I now game at 86ms .... That means I use to game at 199ms for Overwatch, I now game at 230ms to as low as 350ms on certain days??

My speed tests qualify fine for a 4mb line which makes my issue all the more weird. Is anyone having such issues for the past month and longer??

What frustrated me more is the fact that for a period of 24/7/365 I never had any issues and ALWAYS had my max speeds no matter time of day ... now all a sudden all this **** is starting and not Afrihost or Telkom can sort out this issue and they all tell me there are not any problems, when I know there are problems.

I've been having issues for the last two weeks I think, my line was down due to a Telkom fault for about 4 days when it came back on, Afrihost was super slow, it would start at about 7pm or 8pm, even websites would take forever to load. I thought maybe it's a congested exchange but my traceroutes and soeedtests seems adequate. I will admit that the 3rd and 4th hops would get higher as the night wore which to my understanding is caused by shaping. However it seems to be fine again, I haven't had any problems since Saturday.

Same issue, slow internet and downloads around the same time, also on business uncapped.

Think it has something to do with the Seacom Cable??

Afrihost doesn't use Seacom. There are a ton of complaints on the Afrihost threads, I left due to high latency/slow throughput in the evenings.

Test with a different ISP trial account and see if the issue persists.

Streaming Youtube on a 4MB capped unshaped line at 240p and at times dropping down to 144p.

What a time to be alive! Getting disappointed fast with Afrihost - will attempt to contact them to see what's going on - been like this for a month at least. Will be looking elsewhere soon if they can't sort me out!

Do not bother. I have contacted them for the past month trying to sort the issue out. It has been up and down with them AND Telkom.

They report everything fine on their side, and Telkom also reports everything to be fine .... yet I can SEE that things are not fine with my speed.

I mean, for 2+ years I had no issues at all. 24/7/365 full download speed. Now since last month I have slow internet during peak times and browsing experience. This was never a issue up until now

And how will this work seeing as I am already on Afrihost??

Huh? The link is to a trial account of Crystal Web, a competing ISP on a different backbone (Internet Solutions).
If the problem goes away, it's Afrihost that is at fault, else it's your Telkom/OpenServe line.

What I am asking how does it work?? My ISP is Afrihost, and even with a trial account, Crystal Web would be my ISP .... how do I work with two ISP and one Router??

No, you swap the login details on your router, you'll be using the Crystal Web account. Will edit in a moment with a simple diagram of who's responsible for what.

EDIT:
Using my awesome paint skills:
The Internet.jpg

The first piece is your ADSL line, you have a connection to the exchange (DSLAM/ISAM/MSAM), which can be indirect through a smaller exchange. Your entire neighborhood connects to this. From there it's routed to the regional IPC.
The above is all just OpenServe (Telkom Wholesale).

The login details you put in your router determine your ISP once it gets to the IPC.
Your ISP buys IPC capacity from OpenServe for every region, this is a set Mbps and is usually quite costly. Your ISP then reroutes your traffic to the correct destination, be it locally within the country or internationally where they have to buy more capacity on undersea cables like WACS (west coast) or SEACOM (East Coast).

If you change your router details, you can rule out the ISP bit, as they love blaming Telkom if there is a capacity issue, as you have to go through that "last mile" in order to get to your ISP. They're just "passing the buck". If you change your ISP and your issues disappear, then the "last mile" is fine as you're getting perfect service with the other ISP and that shouldn't be possible as you are using the same base infrastructure, it only gets passed on at the IPC. If the issue persists, then both ISP could be at fault, but the likelihood is a lot less and it's probably an OpenServe issue.

I am having exactly this same issue. Am waiting for the Crystal Web account to test, but they said it would take 4 business hours to provision, so only on Monday.
