Last night my 4 meg connection ran at about 400 to 450 kb/s. This morning when I woke up, my internet was dead. At about 12:00 it came back on. The fastest I get is 160 kb/s.
I went into my router's stats and found that my line mode is now ADSL2+. Yesterday it was G.DMT.

My other stats are:

Line mode: ADSL2+
Maximum line rate: 16780 kbps (upstream)
Noise margin: 19 dB (upstream)
Line attenuation: 31.4 dB (upstream)
Output power: 6 dBm (upstream)

Any advice?
Thanks.

My best guess is that your line re-synced and is now running at a lower speed. Try resetting your modem and if it's still slow, log a fault. That's the only thing you can really do.

I did do a reset, but that didn't help.
It also show this:

Downstream rate: 4095 kbps
Upstream rate: 507 kbps

Your modem, depending on what it is, will always only show the "pre-programmed" line speeds.
When it detects a 4mb line it shows 4095/507. But the true speed for most 4mb lines is +-3000/+-450.

You can't tell your true line speed without checking it with a device. Don't know about other devices that can do that besides line bonders and load balancers and maybe some non-commercial modems.
Where did you test a download from?

Ok dude, here's what I would do if I were you.

Download 2 or 3 things at the same time and see if the combined bandwidth of them all go up to 400 kb/s.

Sometimes servers are busy etc, but i'm sure you know that.

If it's not, then you can be sure your line speed is not syncing properly at 4mb.

Just log a fault anyway because I'm almost sure those techies at Hellkom are trained to not allow you to request a VP recreation on the exchange anymore. But hey, try your luck and ask them to recreate the port for you.

They might even tell you that they are busy upgrading the exchange or still working on the DSLAM's in your area.

Battles with Telkom are never smooth and honest. You are just going to have to give them a bit of uphill if all else fails.
