Slow server Ping

Hi All,

We have a dedicated server with 1-Grid in Cape Town.
We send a requests to an outside server, which happens to be with EliteHosting in JHB.
At peak times the requests are as often as 15 requests per second.

On the server the request takes between 0.6s and 1.5s.
When I run the same code locally on my PC it takes between 0.2s and 0.8s.
So quite a difference.

I checked the ping to the external server from both our server and my local PC (in Durban).
From the server it is 139ms and from my local PC it is 14ms. A huge difference.

I've changed the DNS on the server to the same as my local PC (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but this has no change.

I'm in the process of communication with the 1-Grid support, but they are not being too helpful and just say it is because I am in Durban, 1-Grid is in Cape Town and the external server is in JHB which is the reason for the difference in latency - Durban being closer to JHB than Cape Town is to JHB.

Any ideas on what we can do to speed this up?

Yup, change your hosting. 1-Grid sounds like morons and is most probably not interested in debugging the upload speed of your server to it's destination. Host to Host (Cape Town to JHB) shouldn't be more than 20ms ping

Sounds as if its a routing issue between 1-Grid and EliteHost and some congestion.
As Envo said, your response times between servers are through the roof - one would expect those results from international servers.

May be time to start looking around for a new server if 1-grid cant assist you.

Thanks for the responses guys. Not really what I want to me hearing!
Our DB is around 110GB and files around 360GB and we can't afford much down time.
Would need to be a very structured migration.

Will wait to see if 1-Grid can do something otherwise we really will have to look at moving.

Most providers would assist with a migration of that size...

Hi Mudbream

Sent you a PM - we will gladly assist you with the migration of your data, its part of the standard service we offer.

Btw, in regards to your DNS change, I assume you've been fooled by some Afrireps.
It does not affect latency beyond the initial name resolution, after that it's stored in cache and will have no effect for repeat packets sent.
DNS has no effect on ping whatsoever. It is nonsense. DNS provides name resolution services and that is it. Nothing more and nothing less.

Your internet connection does not go through the DNS server, nor would routing through it improve your speed as chances are you will be going through several other connections (potentially on the wrong side of the world) before heading back to where you wanted to go. This does not happen normally anyway.

What Google or OpenDNS might provide you is a slightly faster resolution of names to IP address and possibly some level of protection from known malware domain names.

You might get a quicker initial name resolution, especially if your ISP has a small DNS cache and doesn't see requests for that site often, but after the first request both your server and local machine will cache the request meaning that Google or OpenDNS will be slower if there is a large distance between you and their servers. There will be no improvement to ping tests at all except for possibly the initial lookup.

Just adding that for others in future.

Hi All,

So a traceroute reveals the slow ping area are some servers it goes through in the US.
Any way for 1-Grid to change the route? Or is this something outside of their control?

I have contacted "he.net" regarding it and am waiting for them to get back to me.

Can you send us the full tracert?
Doesnt make any sense that local traffic is routing internationally...

hmmm, routing is not correct at all.
You're going to have to take this up with 1-grid and ask them to investigate.
As per previous responses, local traffic should be sitting within the sub 20ms

It appears the route is going over hurricane electric from hop #5.
It's best to contact 1-Grid and check with them.

Hi All,

Just an update. I opened tickets with both 1-Grid and Reflex (I was incorrect when I said it was Elite Hosting).
Yesterday morning I woke up to find the ping rate was now around 19ms which is a lot more acceptable.

Neither of them have replied or closed the ticket, so at this stage I am a little unsure as to what they have done.

Thanks to everyone who was most helpful - I was blown away by the amount of detail and explanation people were willing to give.

So thanks to all!
I will update if I find out what change was made.

Thanks!

I have been working on a site that is hosted by 1 Grid and the speeds are appalling. Moved to my Elitehost Reseller account and haven't had an issues since.
