I'm on a 4Mb line and my speedtest is good.

If I download from an ftp or http connection it downloads quite quickly but my torrents are running at 20 - 25 kb/s. Could this be from the SAT-3 maintenance?

Strange is I'm in Stellenbosch but speedtest shows I'm in Jhb? Is there a local problem that I'm not aware of?

It is very possible, it really depends on how much traffic is available on the links SAT3's traffic are redirected to.

I'd say this depend on your ISP and if they don't resell SAIX accounts it depends on where they have IPC uplinks to Telkom's ADSL network. Last I checked IS have IPC uplinks in Johannesburg and Durban, but I am speaking under correction it may have changed. Chances are you are routed via JHB for local and international.

my torrents are slow as well on my 384 line but after 5pm they go to normal speed..this has happened in the past few days..

im cursing telkom for not being ready with my 4mb upgradre, the at least even at slow speeds my torrents would be better.

Are these torrents well seeded? Speed on torrents depends on a lot of things. Lots of leechers and few seeders will result in slower speeds, also, with some trackers, your download speed will be throttled if you don't upload enough.

Enable DHT and peer exchange and add additional trackers- often they will be tracking the same file and speed might improve.

Also set your downloads to only use UTP (utorrent 2.0 supports this)

In advanced settings set bt_trans_disposition to 10 to enable UTP only.

In the past I found torrents to be very slow - I am on a 4MB line. I have since stopped downloading torrents and moved on to "newsfiles" now.

I think that every thing that is avaliable on torrents you can get from a good news server as well. Maybe it's time to make a change?? ;)

provided it's not past the retention period of that specific post. i think you'll be quite pressed finding the first season's episode 1, of Lost on the n/s

I also found my torrents were crawling at 40 KB/s. Then later on I got 280 KB/s which isn't bad.
Deffo SAT-3 Maintenance.
