Slow VM Data Speeds

For what its worth to others experiencing problems:

I really don't see the reason for using any other mobile network besides vc at the moment, the infrastructure behind cellc/vm is seriously lacking in comparison. If you want speed (and can spend a bit), go adsl. If you want to go mobile go vc hsdpa.

Have been using vc 3g/hsdpa for a while now and it started off really rough, but it seems they are doing something as it has become a lot more stable over the past few months - its actually really great having it now. I get between 40KB/s and 100KB/s on downloads (using a d/l manager).

Hope I dont jinx myself now!

Painfully slow performance with one phone model on VM.

I routinely use three Sony Ericsson models on MTN
1) Z800i (3G) (Bluetooth and Sony Ericsson USB cable)
2) T630 (GPRS+)(Bluetooth and Sony Ericsson USB cable)
3) J300i (GPRS+)(Sony Ericsson USB cable)

On VM (from Sandton, Bedfordview and Northcliff)) I get comparable performance at GPRS+ rates with the Z800i and J300i, but abysmal performance with the T630i ( on multiple T630 handsets - so not a phone glitch)

Sony Ericsson Tech Support put me through to Ixia and a techie there ascribed the differences to the possibility that the T630, being a dual-band unit is mismatched to the frequency that VM is using - different to the frequency used by MTN. The other two phones are tri-band.

Its odd, but the R0.50 VM rate is working for me for normal browsing on two of the handsets.

Does anyone have any knowledge of what the Cell-C/VM plans are for 3G? I was told November when I bougt my VM starter pack, but comments from the new CEO at Cell-C
seem to rebut this.

After recieving my 128k sim my speed has changed dramatically,it is painfully slow.I use to get very good speed with my Nokia N80,but now with the new sim it is very slow.Any reason?

How can you justify paying 4 times as much for speeds that are only about 3-4 times faster? Yes Vc has done a lot to their 3G network, but at the expense of the GPRS network. It's slow to a crawl and completely unusable for me. Only a company that IS NOT a leading provider will neglect their most basic users for the sake of their high end users. The exorbitant price is not justified when I get up to 25KB/s on EDGE on what is suppose to be an inferior network. I'm happy being connected at 50c/MB.

Why ask for a new sim when the old one was working fine in the first place? Revert back.

Note:All my speeds was on the VM/cellc network, No roaming on VC!

My local top speed on a local hub was 7KB/s DIRECT...The 53mb file downloaded @ 7-11KB/s with DAP,lol

Where and with what are you getting that 3KB/s download?

At the time I was on VM/Cell C with full strength, now the VM/Cell C network seems to have disappeared even though I haven't moved so roaming on Vodacom and its even worse now! Using a SE W800i so just GPRS. In St Francis Bay about 120 km from PE. Maybe they don't have decent backhaul links out here or something but I'm sure I used Voda 3G here before.

It's the same here. When I use 3G I get better speed so it's not a backhaul issue. It's actually funny hearing all the complaints until people find out how slow Vodacom is. Vodacom is no longer the leading network and their 'can't touch this' HAS BEEN touched.

The 64k sim did not work in my datacard, that is why I ordered one,and did a sim swop, now works in datacard but very slow, the 128k sim is very very slow in my N80

Should have rather just got a new one for your data card and kept the old one for your phone. Maybe link them to the same account (I think they have such an option) if you didn't want to have two accounts.

That was not an option ,They just do a sim swop.

I asked nicely and (eventually) they assigned me a new number for my 128K SIM and left my 64K SIM alone.
As I understand it this was the default. They assign you a new number for the 128k sim and only after it is working will they assign your old number with the new sim and deactivate your old sim.

Dont know the reason. I'm just holding on to the old sim for now. I havent done the sim swop yet.

I had mostly pretty good speeds on VM, but the last couple of days it's slowed down like heck... :(

I'm begining to get thourghly disillusioned with the whole cellular internet thing...
None of the providers are reliable ... MTN is best by far over here... but it's still not good enough :(

I think I'm gonna get Aerosat to see if they can reach my house...

I bought a VM sim today the 64 k , What do I need to PM piesang in order to get a 128k sim, to work in my data card?

Only your number. They will call you and get the rest of the details. But first make sure it doesn't work in your card and make a call to any number to activate it.
