Some people are making a point of being over cautious...
I see it most on long trips. Like passing through Harrismith, it is 100km/h zone and there are 2 fixed cameras in the space of 5km. people traveling 100, slow right down to 80 as if they're trying to prove a point.
I'm an advocate for caution, but that is just overboard... no excuse, there's a ruddy sign every 500m declaring the limit 100km/h.
Going through Maritzburg too. There's 7 cameras in that 10km or so. The whole stretch is marked as 100km/h and people slow RAAAAAAIIIIGHT down sometimes.
I've done that trip so often, I hit those maritzburg bendz at 120 or so (favourite part of the trip)... gooi anchors when the cameras are comin up... then speed off again. 100 is a bit drastic if you ask me, especially on the downhill stretch!
I can understand those random cameras that appear out of nowhere... then you get a fright and slow down, but to be traveling on the limit and slow down further is just retarded!
An example of one of those random "outta nowhere" cameras, is about 5km before Harrismith, there's a road which crosses the N3 and for a very small patch, the limit goes from 120 down to 80... and those bastids put a camera in the 80km/h patch.
That camera must be Harrismith's primary source of income! Even I've been caught there... the bloody camera is about a meter behind the signboard saying Harrismith this way and whatever that way... HUGE board, completely hides the camera. Although there are flashing yellow lights, and all sorts of signs to warn you the limit has gone down to 80.
Good observation, coz I also wonder if some people are THAT paranoid... or are they just being dumb!
False.
The margin is 10km/h. What happens is that your speedo is usually 5-10km/h off too. Usually erring on the side of saying you're going faster than you actually are.
So if your speedo says you're going 140... it's very possible you're only doing 130. which is the margin of the camera to go off... But that IS cutting it too close.
Rather stick to 130, coz you'll probably only doing 125, and you'll be well within the margin. The nice thing about doing 10km/h over the speed limit on long trips is that you're almost constantly overtaking. Safely too, instead of flying a holding pattern with some other car that might do something erratic.
There's a psychological edge to it too. Always overtaking others makes you feel likr the drive is going better and you'll get there quicker... the reality is, the difference is not too insignificant to bother with.
BUT YOU FEEL LIKE IT IS!
P.S. I HATE THOSE CARS THAT DECIDE YOU'RE THEIR PACE CAR! UUUUURRRRRGGGGGG!
Leave me alone and keep your distance!

I heard they only fine at +20km/h for an unmanned camera, and +10km/h for a manned camera.
Can anyone confirm/deny this myth ?
That would mean you could do 140 past a 120 camera, but I wouldn't cut it that close.
