I just searched for a list of the smartest and dumbest dogs, and I was quite surprised by the results. I thought I should share:

Brightest Dogs

Understanding of New Commands: Fewer than 5 repetitions. Obey First Command: 95% of the time or better.

Just bear in mind that the "dumbest" dogs aren't necessarily dumb but rather more independent which is why they aren't easily trainable/obedient.

Was frantically looking for Staffies.

Not sure if I should be happy or sad they didn't make either of the lists.

They are just stubborn.

Dog intelligence measures how obedient dogs are to humans...
 
Interesting list! I can agree with the most intelligent dogs, but surprised at the bloodhound. Thought they would be quite intelligent given the fact they are bread mostly as hunting dogs. I have just bought two chinese crested puppies, got them yesterday, and will commence training with them next weekend. Will see how it goes. My Keeki (mixed chinese crested) is super intelligent, and learns very fast. I tought her two weekends ago to play dead on the command 'bang' and when I say it she falls down and roll over - so cute :) Took me half a packet of treats and she got it haha!

so freaking true but RPM couldn't comprehend that since he had to label canines as dumb. they are still smarter than most humans...

There's one exception to that list... Beagles should be under the top 4 most intelligent dogs. Only problem is that they are incredibly stubborn.

They're missing a breed as well. Belgian Shepherds would be just below the Border Collie, but that's just me.
 
I thought the boerboel would make it amongst the 10 smartest, because mine is pretty smart.
 
I guess it is how you train your dog. I presume this study was based on dogs in an obedience class, and from there it was determined which dog was the faster one to learn the tricks.
 
Coren spent much of his life stumbling through the arcane, dead end, poverty ridden, academic psycology wastelands until late in his career he slapped together this junk on dog behaviour and the canine -human bond and hit the Pop Psychology lottery.

Later in his career, (hoseheads personal note: no doubt because Coren was starving to death and sick of eating ramen noodles ) Coren shifted to the study of canine behavior and the relationship that people have with their dogs. This shift away from neuropsychological research also marked a shift in his publishing strategy, away from single study publications in research journals, to publication of his new data as part of material presented in book form. Many of his books on dogs do contain hithertofore unpublished empirical data. For example his book "The Intelligence of Dogs"[31] is based on a survey sent to all of the dog obedience judges in the United States and Canada, and resulted in the ranking of 110 dog breeds by intelligence. The sampling methodology is flawed. The ranking was based on 199 responses from then 50 working judges updated in 2006 from the American Kennel club and Canadian Kennel club OBEDIENCE trial judges. Note: NOT working dog judges

Dogs that are not breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club or Canadian Kennel Club (such as the Jack Russell Terrier, Boerboel etc etc) were not included in Coren's rankings.

Take the lists with a big barrel of salt.

I had a malinois, and been around tons of other malinois owners. They are incredibly intelligent dogs, sneaky as hell though

without a doubt the best dog i have trained. Lots of work though and definitely not a breed for everyone
