Heres the plan ....

I am keen to empower previously disadvantaged folk.

The idea is to set them up in a business that converts our waste and by product into a saleable product - eg - pallets to furnuture, plastic to HFO and the like.

I would set the infrastructure up - land, equipment and utilities - they would run the business (to own) and pay the rental, a portion of the utility bill and lease the kit.
So, they have a zero start up cost, and eventually own the business.

Question is - who is the right person in government to approach on such a deal - or - the right department at DTI?
Has anyone done this before that give me an insight?

Tks

My father helped someone set something up like this a few years back, I'll see if I can have a word when I see him again.

Ok so had a chat with the old man and they did something similar where they helped a local guy who used to recycle their industrial rubbish. They got hold of the DTI who then put them in touch with the correct department (apparently there are dozens). They helped the guy with a business plan and basically a contract saying he could collect their rubbish for free and the DTI (manufacturing sort of department but he is not sure)sorted him with funding which he used for a extra bakkie, working space etc.Hes apparently doing well (this was a good few years ago).My brother has also been through the DTI for something else more recently (last 2 years) and he had to do a business plan etc but they didn't give him money they gave him a few k of vouchers he could use for consultants, marketing etc. Both said they were pretty helpful and there were a few hoops but nothing too hectic.

Not the best of info but it is first hand and I'd say the best thing to do would be to contact the DTI with your proposal and they can point you in the right direction. Really good thing you are doing btw :)
