smoke after idling

Ok so my dad took it in, was over fueling slightly so they adjusted, now reading says 56,9% air/ fuel if I am not mistaken.

They did a dry only compression test and results were 1,2kpi on all cylinders which the guy said is good. They didn't do a wet test though

So they reckon also valve stem seals, I think I must using string push the valve up and have a look.

My car is newish so goes to Hyundai under mp, as does the rest of my family goes to the respective manufacturer.

I service my brothers and GF's old car but that is regular stuff, oil, filters, plugs, fan belt done a coil, fuel pump but nothing major. Te GF now has a new car so that will also go to manufacturer.

send to a mechanic who knows the stuff cos maybe you do something wrong which could end with more problems

and its not going to be cheap

That would be plan A but I need some referrals as could potentially send and end up with more carp. I have been quoted R1500, R2800 and R3800

I am even willing to supply the parts and just pay for labour so I know decent products are used.

i did my engine over last time on my golf ...from pistons to bearing to seals and costed me just over 4000 with labour...so the guys who want to charge 2800 and 3800 dont think you should try there

if im not mistaken seals are very cheap

and labour shouldnt be much

I know I could send the head to an engineering shop for like R250 ish if I supply the parts, then basically R300-R700 for a headset which includes the seals mentioned above and some oil etc to service it one shot and the rest is just labour.

And I say 300-700 as you could buy a femoral headset for just over 300 but I was told they are bad news so should rather go with a Payne or something which is around R600

D3x

Let me put it to you this way:

I personally would rather pay a little more knowing that if said workshop messes up something it's at their expense. If you where to have someone from a backyard do it or try and do it yourself you will end up having to pay for any damages that will occur during the removal and replacing part.

Pay a little extra and have peace of mind.

Just my 2c.

Which area you in?

East Rand, Boksburg

i would prefer not to go too far as if there are issues it becomes a problem to take back etc.

franchise shops around me are: Automate (heard are dodge), SAC (also heard are dodge), Bosch (been in there before and they were super dodge)

then there are lots of smaller guys

I know of a place in the Westrand (Roodepoort) who did a very good job on my Bakkie for years. If you want I can get you their number.

many thanks, will give them a call and possibly take the car through for them to check out based on outcome of call.

I had my car with them 3 times and no problems what so ever. They also have no issues with you supplying the parts.

sorry to revive this thread, but I got my car back from its service today (BMW 1 Series), and noticed lots of blueinsh white smoke at the back of the car - only when idling in traffic pulling away. If I stop at a robot and pull away, there is no smoke (even if I rev hard). It's only if the engine sits for a while.

My car has never smoked before. At the service, they replaced the oil cooler gasket, oil filter housing gasket, oil level sensor o-ring, sump gasket and tapper cover gasket.

That's a lot of gaskets, They said most weren't bad, but I just said just replace them all. Don't want problems later on. The car has just hit 125,000km.

I'm hoping it's excess engine flush or something that's just burning away, but I'll phone the garage first thing in the morning and see what they say, but it's never smoked prior to the service, so something must be wrong.

hmm sounds exactly what that car had, we never ended up fixing it, but it was definately the valve stem seals.

if i recall blueish smoke was oil, white smoke is head gasket, and dark smoke was too much fuel burning.

i would see tomorrow what happens but would definately take it in to check, do those 1 series have dipsticks? if not just see what the oil looks like in the top cover where you can open to fill it.

also it is just possible they over filled the oil, had that happen at a service before.

opening the tappet cover and taking the sump off arent things they do at a normalish service O_o

The dip stick is electronic - the computer tells you the level, and it's full. I'll check it again when the engine is cold to check cold levels and see how much is in then.

It's weird that it happened now and not a few days ago when the car went in.

Definitely need to call them tomorrow.

yeah i know how they work, had a e90 bm, electric dipstick = carp.

mine got overfilled and it just showed full.

Just do another test. Go down a long hill on a trailing throttle, i.e. almost let the car coast down the hill without you accelerating. If it smokes when you acceleration after that, it's usually a valve problem and not that serious. If it smokes constantly under acceleration, then you could have a larger problem.

Give this a try with your Beemer. I am pretty sure valves are the culprit.
