I've done some pretty complex stuff in Flash. I really doubt Smokescreen will be able to convert it successfully.

Tried the Strongbad demo in both Firefox (3.6) and Safari... Firefox was INCREDIBLY slow, barely watchable. Safari, on the other hand, could've fooled me into thinking it was the original Flash file...

Before you get can get rid of Flash you have to convince designers to animate anything without having to think. And don't say expression blend. Designers are creatures of habit, photoshop and flash. Nice concept with smokescreen but damn is it slow!

Is it completely unreasonable to wonder why no one has come out with an open source, html5 friendly alternative to Flash? As in from the ground up, not just a converter.

Because it's difficult, and it requires community+browser acceptance to be successful. Animated SVG might be an option, but as the above posts indicate it requires a high speed javascript processor to work decently.

Maybe no one is interested either. Apart from video, who cares about flash really?
