Smoothwall help required please...

ClamAV on the firewall simply prevents the download of virus-infected files.

You still do need AV on the PC's except if you're running Linux.

Don't despair, you're picking up some essential experience here.
 
If the SW installation of ClamAV blocks incoming rubbish I'm more than happy.

We're not in danger of viruses getting into the system offline. :)

Will definately have another crack at it a bit later.

Is anyone else having problems with Smoothwall dropping it's Internet connections?

Yesterday I tried again...plugged everything into the firewall correctly, replaced one cable that was giving problems, and then it worked flawlessly for about a day.

When I got Home after that, it was disconnected. So I logged in to the firewall, hit connect, and it starts dialing...and that's all it does.

So I plug the network straight back into the router, reenable DHCP, and PPPoE connection, and Et Voila!...we have a connection!

I've tried different cables, and NICs. I still get the same problem. :(

For your specific PPPoE profile you can enable "Persistent Connection" and "Dial on Smoothwall Restart" to enable 24x7 connectivity after a line drop.

It can be found on networking --> PPP settings ---> your specific PPPoE profile

We put a call in for ADSL a while back, but they told us it was an exchange problem.

I agree...if it works some of the time, it can't be Smoothwall. :)

Is it possible to use a Telkom "ADSL USB Pots" modem with smoothwall. The modem supports bridge mode. I just installed smoothwall. I have 6 pc's on my home network. For the Smoothwall pc I have a P2 and I have two network cards, if I can use the usb modem, they I'll probabply just need one network card. Should I choose "Green (Red is
modem/ISDN)" option.
 
Advise on Smoothie Install

Not wanting to open a new thread, I will use this one

I have previously used IPCOP for approx two years and I understand the IPCOP Install - Green and Red NICS, PPPOE Configs, Router to Bridge etc. I am also lead to believe that Smoothie install/config is very similar to IPCOP Install/Config

I have sourced a P3 IBM (128MB and 6GB Drive)that has three available PCI Slots.

I am planning setup for (Green - Internal), (Red - ADSL) and the third NIC to connect to Jawug.

Some Questions.

What PCI Nics to buy. I have heard that Realtek Cards are most compatible and give the least hassle with linux.

Want to create a Green Smoothie. Can I install to a USB memory stick and then boot and operate off the USB Stick. (I believe the IBM PC will boot of USB) Will I still need to Boot off a CD, or can I boot of a floppy, (Win98 system disk type) then install from USB hosting the Smoothie ISO.

Hard Drives eventually fail (the downfall of my last IPCOP running on a 386 - yebo - nice and old) and will cause machine to run hotter, noisier and consume more power.

Help and advise will be appreciated

The default SmoothWall Express 3.0 does not support more than one NIC to the outside world (ORANGE, PURPLE etc interfaces are internal). For this you'll need to look at the Full Firewall Control mod as well.

Check out the hardware compatibility list forum esp the (very new) NICs that work thread. I've heard the reverse ... Realtek not guaranteed at all. Intel and 3Com are generally good.

Again, not in the standard smoothie. There are some mods to run off compact flash and (I think) to boot from USB, but you will have to turn off logging. Logging will kill a compact-flash or USB stick more quickly than a hard disk!

I use pfSense for exactly this reason, as it is quite happy with multiple "WAN" connections!

Unless you can convince him otherwise Libs! ;)
 
Smoothie Install Options

PC Bios does not allow boot from CD. (Quite old)

Looking for methods to setup

Smoothwall Community Forum says Rawrite image to boot off floppy option not available any more. Smoothie Forum also reports that PXE DHCP boot for smoothie 3.0 also not supported

It appears that only method is to setup in a newer machine with NIC's intend for use installed in machine, then all moved to target machine.

Anyone used this method. Was any issues found. anyone have any other suggestions.

Yup, my policy too... use whatever YOU want to use, and don't be pressured by others!

I must actually give smoothie a try again one of these days... am happy with my pfSense's, but am yearning for new goodies to play with!
 
It's not just the ease of getting the basics to work ... it's also the add-ons and ease of getting assistance afterwards as your needs grow. The community for SmoothWall is good. What's it like for pfSense? (I have no experience of it)
