SmoothWall shutdown query...here's a tricky one for you. ;)

Ola,

I finally took SmoothWall off my insanely lengthy To Do list last week.

It's up and running as it should.

Here's the situation...

The SW protects our little Home network, which consists of a few people.

We get a lot of lightning at our place and replacing electronic bits all the time is becoming very costly.

We've now decided to unplug everything every day, despite surge protectors, etc.

I am the 'Admin' at Home, and because I don't want anything being mistakenly buggered around with, I control the SW passwords. I am also the only 'IT literate' person.

...I do however need a way for someone to shut the box down when I am not there. Simply unplugging it is going to cause a problem at some stage.

What I thought of doing was (newb' with this), saving a Putty config' with the login details on the other desktops and then somehow having a command ready to go...

Am I on the right path here, or is there another way to go about this?

Internal security is obviously not an issue.

Thanks.

Why don't they just push the power button once, wait for the shutdown signal to go thru and shutdown to happen, and then unplug the box?

Hi Fb,

If it really is that simple with SW, then I am justifiably feeling rather rosey and daft.

Coming from a mainly Windows background, and having watched the shutdown process on SW once before (manual shutdown), I took that as the procedure and never thought it might actually be linked.

I'll give it a try tonight.

Thank you.

Failing that, yes you should be able to send a remote command via putty as well. Not sure if you will be able to save the password though.

Cant you just create a low level user to the web site control area, and just give that user access to the shutdown command?

If the motherboard supports ACPI then yes, it should be possible.

I'm running ipcop which is essentially the same as smoothwall and it supports shotdown via the power button. With acpi enabled in your bios and with the correct kernel loaded, pressing the power button will turn off the computer.
