SMS over GPRS

Apparently you can send sms's over GPRS - and it is meant to be much more efficient on the network than sms's over GSM.

Some guy was demonstrating this to me on an sms server the other day.

So i went into my phone settings and changed it to send my messages over GPRS and it just bombs out.

Is there some special setting or sim card or something that we need to make this work?
 
There is no real benefit from setting it to use GPRS afaik.

But, why not use MXit and pay less than 1c per message.

It is an instant messaging application that uses java, so you dont need a symbian phone for it =8) Keep in mind that it still is a little buggy but hey its free, and they are improving it constantly.

Becuase it uses GPRS you only pay for the data you send and receive, and the 300+ messages i sent and reveived the past 2 days has cost me.......51c.
Thats right, 51 South African cents. Going from R100 to 51c is not a bad deal at all.

As i mentioned it is more efficient - almost 10 times the number of messages can be sent per hour if i remember correctly. Which is not too relevant to the average use but for bulk sms servers it makes a big differance.
I think the server was running on a competitor's network though.... :(

Well it depends how many messages you send :D sometime i send messages to and contact group and it is a little slow - imo
 
Ok thanks. In the areas i live and work in the messages will probably never reach their destinations if i use GPRS =8p

If I think logically, the networks probably block this because normal sms brings in a lot of revenue...

Anyone know of any overseas networks that allow this?

T-Systems. But you are billed at the SMS gateway anyway, so transmission method is irrelevant...
 
But the network sill knows your sending an sms right? So they can still rape us.

You pay per message broadcasted. All smses go through a switching center (same applies for SMS over GPRS), and you are billed per message switched. If you had to use GPRS, you would pay for the data usage in addition to the switch charge, so it would be more expensive (you dont pay the data charge using the current transmission method).
Wrt raping us : T-Mobile (USA) charge for INCOMING smses as well!!! Howz that for raping the public!
