My wife was browsing facebook and did one of those IQ test things  because it was sent to her by her friends.

At the end of the 'questionnaire' it required her celphone number so see her results and without thinking, she hastily completed the form and submitted it.

Few seconds later, she was blasted with SMS and they all claim that she subscribed to a service for R50 pm. In order for her to unsubscribe, she has to SMS the word 'stop'.

The company seems local as its number is 082 xxx xxxx. (I will provide the number if someone wants it).

Are they allowed to deduct R50pm x12 (amount of subscriptions) or are they fishing for her to sms them at the cost of R50/sms? Can a company 'subscribe' you to a service at R50pm by entering a mere cellphone number onto a webpage? What is the legality behind this?

i saw those things, in the small print it says if you enter your number you subcribe to their service.... she has to sms the word 'stop' but that should cost like R1.

these people are skelm !

She is on pre-paid (fortunately), but she's had this number for quite some time and would really like to keep it.

Cel companies should stop this BS! No company should be allowed to charge you more than the usual SMS rates nor allow you to subscribe to these services. It's too open for fraudulent behaviour.

PM replied! Would really appreciate it.

Thanks!

She can get a SimSwop.

The instructions come with when you buy a new Vodacom sim pack. You phone in and they swop it for you, for free.

You'll need numbers of 5 recently called people tho.

I wouldn't mind a link to that game.

I have a few enemies phone numbers I would like to subscribe to this service:D

I don't think they can deduct money from your sim card unless you actually physically sms them.

...Otherwise stuff like in the post above can happen all too easily.

This should be made illegal. Bastards! I wonder how many kids get caught with this kind of bull.

Evil! :D:D:D:D

All they need is your number and an innocuous SMS... and when you SMS "STOP" to their number, they know it's active and bombard you with all sorts of junk, and deducting money from your account.

Search for "Sambar Trading" on this forum.

But if you do not SMS them at all, am I right in assuming that they cannot take your money.

Thanks for the advice so far. I've sent a complaint to WASPA and thanks to Nephew, I've found who these bastards are :

http://www.integrat.co.za/

Intergrat is just a service provider, it's probably one of their clients.

See their contact page, they have a phone number and email address for Un-subscription queries.

They can probably tell you who the scammer is.

Mhh, I wonder if I should subscribe them to their own service

That's what I'm assuming as well. It would be completely unlawful if they could!

From what you have said, the sms is pretty misleading or confusing and most people WILL sms back out of panic to remove themselfs from the subscription. That is pretty unlawful already in my book.
