SMS spam: What you can do about it

Invasive Marketing

I don't get how any company can actually make any money off of anyone using such intrusive marketing tactics. If people want to make use of a service, they'll go to your store or contact the provider. Don't call me telling me about this awesome laptop I can get on a new contract or the R200/pm special for a HSDPA+ modem with 600MB of data even though I have uncapped internet at home already. [sarcasm]Autopage never spams with cr*p like that[/sarcasm]

From the WASPA Code of Conduct (for what it's worth...)

11.9.2. Customers must be able to unsubscribe from any subscription service via SMS using no more
than two words, one of which must be ‘STOP’. ...
11.9.3. The ‘STOP’ request described above must be charged at the lowest tariffed rate available (with
the exception of reverse billed rates).

and

12.3.2. Customers must be able to unsubscribe from any notification service via SMS using no more
than two words, one of which must be ‘STOP’. ...
12.3.3. The ‘STOP’ request described above must be charged at the lowest tariffed rate available (with
the exception of reverse billed rates).

Tried phoning an MTN Loaded IVR. Shortly thereafter I was on their SMS spam list advertising that number. What use is a code of conduct if it's flaunted like that

Just received this, after submitting a complaint via the WASPA website on Monday.

Subject: Complaint Ref:#12010 Escalation of unsubscribe #1129671

Dear XXXXXXXXX

Since your unsubscribe request was not resolved using the informal
process, it has now been escalated to a formal complaint against
TMobileSA and will now be handled using the formal complaint procedure
in section 14.3 of the WASPA Code of Conduct.

Accordingly:

- The WASPA member against whom this complaint has been lodged will
be informed of the complaint, and given five working days to
respond.
- After five working days, notwithstanding any response from the
WASPA member concerned, the complaint will be assigned to an
adjudicator for review, and if upheld, determination of
appropriate sanctions.
- Once the adjudicator has determined whether there has been a
breach of the Code, and any sanctions, you will be provided with
a copy of the adjudicator's report.

If you have any questions regarding the Code of Conduct or the
complaints procedure, please address your queries to
<[email protected]>.

Warm regards,
WASPA Secretariat

I see the CPA requires service provides to provide us with an option to stop 3rd party billing - guess what I'm doing on the 1st of April.

Is it only me or did SMS spam increased 10-fold the moment you registered for RICA. I get the impression that my details are now dumped in a 'public' domain

Random though... Many spam sms's now come with the option to reply stop, promising that they will stop sending you spam. Does this stop action work like those spyware stop buttons on pc e mail where once you push it, it infects your mobile with all sorts o nasties?
Doesn't work but does help in filtering out spam
