SMS Spam

So heres a fun one...

I can categorically state that I haven't used my Afrihost SIM's number in any sign-up, nor posted it anywhere, due to the simple fact that I have no idea of what it is (nor do I care - it's for data only).

It's also obviously a brand-new SIM from them that I received as part of the MiFi 5GB deal last week.

Yet somehow, low and behold, I received a spam SMS to the number yesterday (shows up in my MiFi web manager) to the tune of:

Pin#SW26321:Congratulations your mobile has won £2.5M for I.M.F Award with Pin#SW26321. To claim contact Claims Dept. via: [email protected]

Could this have somehow leaked through the RICA process or should I put it down to this possibly being a recycled number which was previously signed up to a spam service?

I'm keen to collect my prize, just don't remember ever mailing the IMF on their gmail address.. :/

My dad and I both have an MTN 2GB per month sim with 081 numbers and we get spam regularly...

Same here. Saw that I had a new SMS, expecting it to be from Afrihost/MTN.
However it was the same spam SMS.

Just deleted it and haven't received anything since then.

I got somebody's banking transactions by SMS...

And one or two other spammy ones. SMS light was not blinking on the router...

Not bothered by that, as long as the mifi router works

I get someone's banking transactions from Grahamstown and Tahoe's Spur on my 3G dongle.

I just want to confirm, we absolutely do not sell/ pass on any of our clients details. The chances are that the spam is being generated by a random generator that spammers use. There's no need to worry

This is a common trend with recycle numbers. Happen to me with an MTN number not once but five times. You have won a competition etc. I wonder if it's an internal leak.
