Hi,

Is it possible to send an SMS message to all users in a certain cell/town/city/region without going through a user registration process? What/who is required to do this? An example is when there is water restrictions in a certain town to notify all people in the town (permanent residents, visitors as well as tourists; i.e. all people with a cellphone in that city) of the situation?

Thanks!
Braam.

And you'll need a good relationship with all the people in the area to stop them from slagging you off and reporting you to WASPA (if you're registered)...

I actually wouldn't care WHAT you're sending me.. I'd take exception to broadcasted message and throw my toys out the cot.

Technically it is possible and we can do it.

Question is why do you need to do it and how do you get the opt-in?

I'm sure if it was easy we'd all be getting a lot more spam...

v3g : That will always be the issue....

Messages like what this person is suggesting (In terms of water restrictions etc) would require an opt in.. otherwise I would want to know WHERE and HOW they got my cell phone number.

Thanks a million guys! At least I know it is technically possible (what isn't these days?). I expected that cost be one of the major barriers as you'll in effect sign a blank cheque with sending smses to all users in a cell not knowing the exact number before sending. I thought about USSD but I don't like the "request info" component for the mentioned example. The Cell Broadcast (thanks Kobus!) as well as the shortcut number idea sound like the best solutions.

uhh, run where?

actually, i'd probably rather not know....

Couldn't you get certain towers in an area to broadcast a message to all phones connecting to it in an area?

Personally I wouldn't want the spam either, but I can see it can be handy in life threatening circumstances. ie: Flash floods in area.. Or like with Tim's example :D

What if its something along the lines of: "Koeberg is suffering a meltdown! Run!"?

Maybe then you could make an exception? :D

You know, with all the cr@p that is sent these days, if I received a message like this, I would delete it without reading as the flesh melted off my bones!.
