SMS will 'drive the mobile Internet'

why waste R3 when you can use google? might be slower but it will save R3..

Does anyone know why SMS's cost so much? At least: Do the cellular companies have a handy excuse, rather than just confessing that they charge so much simply because they can?

If ever there was a case of cannabilistic price gouging it would be the SA Cell operators with their SMS charges. We have the highest SMS costs in the world. Almost all of these charges are pure profit, since there is very little cost to the operator for sending or receiving SMS.

You can buy a bundle of SMS in 'developed' world for under 1 US cents each , but yet in SA we are forced to pay these prices!

If you use SKYPE to send an SMS ( yes you can) it only costs 0.07 Euro cents or 7 SA cents !!!! And they are still making a profit.

If you consider the mxit way of sending a message then youre looking at almost the true cost of sending an sms.

If you get charged 30cents for an sms the true cost is likely to be in the range of 1c if even in data/traffic/interconnection fees.

Unfortunatley SA is a market were a lot of ppl aren't highly informed of the alternatives leading to the cell operators, bank instutitions an various other segments of our market charging us indecent costs.

but remember sms is a hardware solution so intial cost is perhaps a bit (then again i think is almost guarenteed to be bundled with 2.5g equip no?) and thus should be cheaper perhaps? kinda like PTT vs Voip.
