Hi,

For the past week, I have been unable to send mail out on both smtp.wbs.co.za (my normal smtp server) and smtp.iburst.co.za

Is it working?

It says that the SMTP server is either not available or not accepting connections.

nslookup shows:
Name: smtp.iburst.co.za and smtp.wbs.co.za
Address: 196.2.97.233

First prize would be if they could reinstate own smtp servers for businesses like they had when I signed up.

I see now the site has been seperated between personal and businesses so maybe that feature will come back.

But back to point, I just want any smtp server to work since I am now stuck at home unable to send work mails.

Thanks
Nick

Please try and not force DNS address's anywhere and if you are using OpenDNS please drop it and try again.

Let us know.

Thanks

Try these static DNS Addresses, seems like they work like a bomb on iBurst:

168.210.2.2
196.41.0.10

Works for me... :)

Or use the same smtp server as your incoming mail, with Authentication...

Although if anyone can help it's Shaun Green (Above) so maybe listen to him...

I had the same issue.
Switching to same SMTP server as incoming mail with Authentication had no effect.

Neither did using the Dynamic update on OPENDns.

What did solve it (at Shaun's suggestion) was setting my DNS to 'Automatic from ISP'. :)

Sucks to be you , this is why I point-blank refuse to rely on them for outbound mail. Besides..

..this, for me - and the office at which I work so that's 4 boxen - at least, this is one thing that continues to work just fine. Of course, following Occam-ish doctrine, I'll plump for the reason as being no-one is futzing with it!

Seeing as this is specifically mentioned here, is there a valid reason why we CAN'T have OpenDNS back? It provides valid services beyond mere DNS that I don't see iBurst ever getting around to/getting right (if for no other reason than they have no incentive to do so) and I, for one, want it back! But no need to hijack this thread, I'm as/more happy to watch for a reply in the DNS/mail error thread.

Yes I am agree.
I am in a situation where I use OpenDNS when browsing etc.
And then I have to go and reset my router to 'Automatic from ISP' to send mail.

Very tedious.

<EDIT>
Nevermind , saw you already tried smtp.wbs.co.za

I don't know if anyone else still having this issue, but the mail server is still not working for my old high school. The outgoing mail stopped working on Monday, and nothing we tried worked. I followed steps here in this thread, no avail. Calling the help desk hasn't helped either.

They are in a bad situation, as they need to send mail out but cannot do so since the connection is locked down to the iBurst smtp server. What I'm struggling to understand is why it stopped working, since for the previous 4 odd years it's been ok.

Is there anyone out here that has any solutions? My old high school is seriously upset about this, and they are trying useless remedies that aren't working.

Thanks all :)

EDIT: Some more info in case it's needed.

Basically, they have a domain that is their name that is hosted by Hetzner. All mail is downloaded from that POP3 server, that works a charm. Mail sent out goes through the iBurst server, which until Monday, worked fine. As we know, iBurst don't allow access to other smtp servers.

The iBurst device is plugged into a Smoothwall box, with DNS set to be retrieved automatically. The mail server on the inside of the school is Exchange, and it sends the mail through the Smoothwall box.

I've pinged the smtp.iburst.co.za server which responds, but a telnet to port 25 does not work. The same to smtp.wbs.co.za also does not work. I am however able to telnet into pop3 servers as well as smtp.saix.net, which leads me to believe that there is an issue with the iBurst smtp server.

The helpdesk swears everything is ok, and I don't know what more to suggest to my old school. They getting desperate to get mail out.

Is it possible to get iBurst to allow a connection from the school into the Hetzner smtp server? That way it should prevent these kinds of issues in the future.

Hi all.

Please let me finalise this.

We do not '' Block OpenDNS''.

If you are suffering to use your OpenDNS please recreate your account with them and continue using OpenDNS. No more mail problems.

What caused the issue with OpenDNS, we are not quite sure about.

Should you not want to use smtp.iburst.co.za you will be required to do the following....

Send a mail to [email protected]
Indicate that you would like to use an alternative service.
Tell us what smtp service you want to use.
Give us your location..e.g. DBN, JHB etc.
Supply us with your user name.
give us a one liner on why.

They will get back to you shortly informing you that the change has been affected.

Thats all Shaun wrote.

Thanks

Thanks Shaun, glad to hear its still possible to use own service.

On my original post, smtp.iburst.co.za was working last nite after I told router to use assgined DNS addresses, not opendns.

Hi Nic777

No problem. I have had numerous queries regarding this.

The issues arrive from clients forcing DNS address's or they are using OpenDNS.

Both situations are easily rectified.

Any quries please do not hesitate to call.

Thank you

Email doesn't work using OpenDNS

Pretty much what it says on the cover. I want to use OpenDNS, but my email doesn't send if I do. I stopped using OpenDNS sometime last year when people on iBurst first started reporting this issue. I tried it again a few nights back, and I'm shocked it hasn't been resolved yet.

Try using mhub-01.cpt.wbs.co.za as your smtp server in Cape Town.
