okay someone who knows more about that can maby just inform me on something, the SNO is partly owned by Eskom right? could we see that the SNO will be using BPL most likely? i mean they will that way be able to have a bigger infrastructure than telkom from day 1? anybody's thoughts on this? what do you think they will do? i mean they cant go and install a whole new landline system?

OK, I am no expert on the cost of infrastructure, but I would think R256 million is a very small amount - any one have an idea how much infrastructure R256 million could buy?

ja i also think 256million is not much, especially it seems most of it is a "fibre network" which doesnt come cheap either. but its a start
While I don't think that R256m is alot of money, these are mostly just fibre. Fibre lines are expensive to install, but they are way cheaper than what they call "last-mile" lines that needs to be connected to every home/building.
The R256m means that they now have their own high-capacity lines and now they can think about connecting consumers to these lines. Whether they be thinking about the current Telkom telephone lines that run ADSL or BPL will depend. But personally BPL is unlikely.

The SNO will be using Telkom's last mile infrastructure for the main part of their ADSL roll-out. BPL is just a last-mile solution, and where Telkom already has last mile copper installed, BPL is not really necessary..
As for the R256 mill, it was estimated that to build the same from scratch would have costed in the region of R2 billion. I think the R256 mill could have just been a discounted value, as Transnet do infact own a portion of the SNO
