According to the newly launched SNO website, the provision of broadband services is somewhere on the back of the wagon and the inference is that it will only be provided from next year. Probably. Maybe.

So, what I propose is to make the SNO aware of the DEMAND for broadband in South Africa. To this end, please send a mail to

[email protected]

to register your interest in ADSL services.

While I too would like to see them roll out broadband, I do not want this to happen at the expense of other products. The biggest blow to Telkom would be if they lose a large proportion of their business clients. It is here that I want the SNO to concentrate.

Weaken Telkom, and Telkom will need to change its attitude, or die. (I prefer the latter to the former :D )

It doesn't make any sense for them to provide consumer broadband before the options they are going for. Go for the low hanging fruit first

Broadband users will be some of the first to benefit from the SNO because the ISPs will be some of the first organisations to sign on with SNO.

Anyone know how this will work? For example, I buy my ADSL line from telkom - it goes to their exchange, and they log the usage and bill the ISP where required. Now, if SNO offers the ISP a service, where does this fit into the picture?

I can still see leased line users and peering links benefiting. Or will the SNO offer IPC links to the ISPs.

Moederloos : At the moment the ISP's have the option of buying bandwidth from the Telkom (SAIX) or Internet Solutions (IS). When the SNO comes along, there will a third competitor. Sentch will also be able to provide their own bandwidth due to EASSy I assume

The SNO website says, "As the SNO expands its foot-print across the country in 2006-07, we plan to introduce a variety of retail services for the benefit of individual consumers. However, in order to ensure that the SNO customers experience nothing but the very best, we intend to roll-out our consumer services in stages, starting with basic voice telephony and Internet access in the major cities of South Africa. These services shall be available in with pre-paid as well as post-paid billing to suit the individual needs of each customer. In due course, the SNO will also provide true broadband Internet access services with voice capabilities. For more information or for queries, contact : [email protected]"

So lets email them for more information........

I've already emailed them on that address on the issue of true broadband and I'm waiting for a reply. Will post back when they reply.

The SNO wants to crawl before they run but we need them to start running NOW!!

Sending email as well.

Had a quick look at their site ... :( .. there are state (South African) owned companies involved? ... not a good sign ... I thought it was going to be a private company? I wonder if the South African Government will own 40% of it.

SA has to change it's definition of broadband to be a minimum of 512K coz I havent even heard of 192 or 384K broadband offerings overseas...

Is this going to be wireless broadband? :P Where do I find information on how the SNO is planning on setting up?

u guys are living in dream land if you think telkom will be crushed or even made to sweat

we will have this company around for alot longer than you all think

I totally have to agree with killadoob. Telkom will be here for decades to come. The SNO won’t think of going into any kind of price war, as that will surely cause their downfall.
Telkom is been over charging us for years, and will surely be ready to come down with their prices as soon as anyone challenges them.

I will be moving to the SNO ASAP if their prices and services are on par with that of Telkom, just because I had way too much problems with Telkom and cant stand them because of all their raping over the years, but to think they will crush Telkom is a bit of serious daydreaming.

youradsl - so you'll move to SNO "if their prices and services are on par with Telkom", why bother, you are already getting this with our beloved Telkom. Or would you like to rephrase your sentence.
LOL

IMNSHO, the SNO is making a mistake with putting braodband on the back burner. Imagine if they roll out broadband (and yes, 512k minimum!) and then charge a nominal fee for VoIP... will be killing two birds with one stone!

Will email this as soon as I'm home, since SMTP doesn't work through this firewall! Hopefully they'll see the light...

This should be obvious from what I said - I'll move to the SNO even if they only have a service equal to that of Telkom’s, just because I don’t like Telkom - if their service is not up to par I wont move.

I hope you understand this one - it shouldn’t be too hard.
