SNO Broadband

if they just offer bandwidth it won't save much except for high end users since currently 3/4 of my cost is paying for "line rental" 192k..

ICASA needs to pull their fingers out of their bottoms and force Telkom (and now SNO) to provide broadband without charging line rental, (like they do all over the world except here). This alone will have a significant effect on affordability and before you know it, the big guns of ITC world will be toast their successes and the south african public will be enjoying wide scale use of broadband.

I agree with you 100%. The only reason stopping me from getting DSL is the line rental...if that was dropped then myself and a few other 100 000 people would stock up on broadband. I don't mind paying once-off fees for installations and modems, paying my monthly ISP fee but the line rental has to be dropped, it's a ridiculous fee to be paying just to have the privilege of owning an ADSL line.

Edit. owning an ADSL line is not a privelege...it's a right

I believe the SNO's involvement in the EASSy cable is going to be a big winner for them. While we'll still have to use Telkom's lines, we will be able to hop onto a SNO backed ISP and reap the rewards of cheaper bandwidth (higher caps, maybe better contention ratios, etc.). This, however, will only come into effect in mid to late 2007 :(

Cheers, Nick

You want low contention rates? Use Telkom Internet come end 2007. :D :D

Now, now, why insult me?!

This should be obvious from what I said - I'll move to the SNO even if they only have a service equal to that of Telkom’s, just because I don’t like Telkom - if their service is not up to par I wont move.

I hope you understand this one - it shouldn’t be too hard.

Great thinking, you are getting **** service from Telkom and are willing to move to a different company offering thesame **** service. Why bother?
Never mind, answer not required.

Yup. Thanks Dominic :)
With the way John Sihra (EASSy Project Co-ordinator) is talking about this line, it looks as if it is gonna give the SNO a big boost as far as international bandwidth is concerned. Now, I don't see Telkom dropping their line rental too much anytime soon, however, with the introduction of the SNO and EASSy, competition is going to be fierce between ISP's. We probably won't see a big cost cut, but rather, more bang for our buck :).

This is just my prediction though!
Cheers, Nick

If you took that as a insult I wont say anything else. Seems like you have a personality complex.
Just read what people say before you leave your ****** comments.

I'm sure there are loads of people here that will move if the SNO offers the same service, just because of hatred towards Telkom.

Telkom will have to drop the line rental - otherwise SNO providing service on back of telkom... and telkom makes tons on SNO business. Not right - can't happen.

and I don't want to wait till 07
