SNO's launch plan

It also said customers would “no longer be limited in the bandwidth they can access.”
Telkom still has exclusive undersea cable rights so this statement probably only means unlimited local bandwidth.
We are still some way away from affordable international bandwidth.

Is there anything preventing them from laying their own? Sentech is one of the partners in EASSY, so I assume VSNL can just lay their own. Didn't SAT-3 only cost R200m-R300m?

the way i see it is that telkom doesn't own the cable, they have a share in it. they have exclusive rights to the landing stations in sa. but since vsnl also have a share in the cable, perhaps the sno is hoping to gain access to the landing stations via vsnl? could be why they're promising unlimited bandwidth. i could be wrong

That doesn't answer my question. Is there anything preventing them from laying their own cable. I remember SAT-3 only costing R200m-R300m, so it shouldn't really be a problem money wise

If these guys are not just giving lip-service, it certainly does sound promising. But actions speak louder than words. I look forward to finding out next year.

I think its $200m-$300m US.

Telkom has said pretty much the same gumph in previous press statements.
According to Papi, Telkom is also "focusing on customer service and affordability". According to Papi the services are already "affordable". I'm pretty sure Papi also mentioned something vague about a "next-generation" network. I'd love to know which generation the network is the next of. I suspect Telkom's "next-gen" network is in fact referring to the generation following the manual exchange network - ie. automatic exchanges and leased diginet.

As with Telkom, the proof of the SNO's statements will be in the reality of what actually happens pricing and service-wise. Until I can actually compare products, anything the SNO's reps say is merely to keep the media buzz going.
So far Telkom's promises have been more for the purposes of dis-information and damage control than anything else. Time will tell if the SNO takes the same road.

Sounds promising, lets just hope thats not all it is. I suppose its easy for them to deliver to the major suburban areas. The true test will be when and if they can deliver services to the outlying areas, including bandwidth!

Same here... let us hope they keep their promises and really deliver. I'm looking forward to do business with them. 6 months will be gone in a jiffy anyway.

This is a very promising statement. I like "unlimited [local?] bandwidth" and "affordability".

Hopefully this is not a pipedream.

Yep, youre right, better get my application letter ready....

20 x Leased Lines to start with that Telscum can do without!

ROFL - they're already colluding on their public announcements !!! We're in deep k@k@.

I think you guys are interpreting his comments WAY too literally. You're taking them in the context of broadband, he made them in the context of telecommunications and business. I don't think he's saying uncapped anything.

Well they have said before that they will be focusing on broadband... so if they can offer 2-5 mbits or more for the same price as telkom are offering now i would say that this statement holds true.

They have said that broadband is an important market; find me a quote where they say they're focussing on it specifically.

I'm not saying they aren't - I just think its easy to read whatever you want into broad statements.

I think this (what was in the artical) should be true. Not a very smart business stragedy to lie before you even start selling anything.
