SNR and Line Attenuation

Here are mine...we're lucky enough to have the DSLAM in the same building.

ATU-R (DS) ATU-C (US)
Modem Status: Showtime (DMTDSL_SHOWTIME)
DSL Mode: ITU G.992.1 (G.DMT)
Capacity Used: 45% 49%
Noise Margin: 19.0 dB 13.0 dB
Output Power: 1.0 dBm 1.0 dBm
Attenuation: 7.0 dB 4.5 dB

Sorry for going a bit off topic here, but in my quest to solve the mystery of my higher latencies, can anyone please have a look at my ping -t results to the saix routing server. I used both my Axxess local only account, as well as my normal (local + intl) Cybersmart account.

As you can see, something is not lekka with the routing of my connection. Five of my friends in Bloem, all have 384k connection like me, and all 5 use Cybersmart as their ISP as well, and they yield ping results of between 35ms - 40ms MAX using this same test, without any big ping differences like I have. And ingame in BF2 they ping 28ms - 40ms !!! where I on the otherhand ping 55ms - 69ms with flucuations of above 100ms sometimes which comes down again.

So what does this mean ? Could it be my line ? I doubt it, since I have never ever had any line disconnections, desyncs or anything and my line stats are really good. I think its a routing problem... ?

..sigh :(

BTW MrNutz, to what does that 41. IP point to ?

it has to do with the Radius .

if you have WILD adsl account problems (Ti) - they often let you ping that ip with a -t - then they can exactly see what username /ip is querying it.

it has a clean but small pipe - thus the ping times are optimal.

doesn't seem then that you have any connection issues...if u had routing issues - those ping times would have been MUCH higher

Yeah, but still, it doesn't explain as to WHY my friends have so low ping times in comparison with mine. Could the only reason then be that my exchange is near full capacity in comparison with theirs ? or did their exchanges get upgraded ? I just want answers thats all...

i hear ya... telkom/saix are not gonna be worried anything if your latency is sub 100ms at all....thats the sad part..they consider it to be "OPTIMAL" - yet not PERFECT as we would like.

PCTECH had a similar problem a while back - but it then had been a case of pings going over 120-150 and that for local is not acceptable.

50-60ms is ok for bf2 - shouldn't have problems. if it spikes REGULARLY - then u might have to build some evidence - and try to attempt logging a ticket.

then its IPNET at saix who should have a look..

Yeah I already emailed SGS's gamesmaster with a whole bunch of tests that I performed on my side. They are currently closed till next year 14 January, but I will wait patiently and see what he has to say. He did manage to fix my problem last year, when I was in a similar position with my ping, hopefully he can help me again. :)

I know a 50-60 ping is ok for BF2 and basically any game, its just , my friends' pings are lower, and I would like to know why mine is higher, and if anything can be done physically to get it lower, then I would like something to be done about it. I usually was in the 38- 50ms range, so I know it can go lower...

Anyhow, thanks for your help and advice.

Damn, all this talk about 4mb made me hungry........so I ordered some too :D
My stats currently : (will see how it changes....)
Connection Speed 384 kbps 128 kbps
Line Attenuation 6.0 db 3.5 db
Noise Margin 30.3 db 31.0 db
Had a quick look (returning home from golf, on my way to work :)) and my stats are now :
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 6.0 db 3.5 db
Noise Margin 30.3 db 31.0 db

Is it normal for attenuation and noise margin to stay the same ? btw, looks like my download speeds are still limited to 384 though

/Update : The beast has awakened :D

well then you are MORE than lucky!

those values are superb for our little country :)

My appolgies for brining up an old thread(I used the search function), my adsl is now finally installed and I have the following stats:

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin 38.0 dB 31 dB
Line Attenuation 4.5 dB 2.5 dB

Are these stats any good or not? As I understand it currently the lower your attenuation and the higher the snr the better, or am I totally misguided?

brilliant specs!

Ok, I'm happy to hear the specs are good.

I'm thinking the possible reasons for this is:

1) It took Telkom almost 2 years to actually get this line working
2) I'm not even 300m away from the exchange
3) It's a entire brand new setup by Telkom, I've actually had to watch the poar the cement to build it on etc.
4) I think I am the only person who is currently receiving DSL from this exchange as nobody else put up a big enough fight :)

Just to clarify again though, you want low attenuation and high SNR margin?

No, only took 512 for the time being, will upgrade at a later stage again.

SNR Margin 40.1 22.0 dB
Line Attenuation 33.9 18.5 dB

Loss of Signal 0 0
Loss of Frame 0 0
CRC Errors 0 12
Data Rate 384 128 kbps
Latency FAST FAST

Is this bad????
How about the other stats??

Thanks!!
