SNR degradation

Hi,

I have a 4MB ADSL line, it has always synced without much trouble with an up/down SNR of around 13-15 (up and down).
Yesterday it started disconnecting constantly when I checked on my modem the SNR was bouncing between 3-6 constantly (both up and down, though down was worse). Today, it's sitting on up/down 7/6 and my line is only syncing at 768Kbps.. :(

Any ideas what would cause such a sudden degradation and what I could do about it?

Thanks.

Has it been raining in PE lately? I found that rain on the copper pairs would completely bugger up my SNR when I still had such a long loop, any crackling on the phone?

Also check if anyone has fiddled with your plugs, and check if maybe a new appliance has been installed close by?

It all makes a big difference!

Yeah this can royally bugger up things. Lift up the phone receiver and dial 0 to get rid of the dial tone and listen for noise on the line.

Next up disconnect all device (phones, filters, faxes etc) and only leave the router connect and see if things improve.

Not much, no more than usual quite warm yesterday and today. The phone line does have quite a bit of static noise though.

Nope nothing new, I also tried unplugging/re-plugging all the phone connections. No difference.

Thanks for the ideas guys. :)
I also pm'd the Telkom rep here, he indicated there seems to be a problem with the line an they're gonna look into it, hopefully it gets sorted.

On a side note the other day when I was walking in the neighborhood I was observing the Telkom lines servicing the area and I noticed at one point they're heavily over grown by trees, can't even see the lines at those points.. I'm sure this is gonna cause problems for the area at some point (if it's not already)..

Had the same issue in Cape Town about 2 weeks ago, line was installed 4 weeks prior. Techie found a dry joint in the wall box at the bottom of my stairs, chopped off old crimp replaced and my line has been stable ever since. Strange stuff copper...

I've had that before where the tree branches chafed through the insulation, guys ended up running a whole new cable between the stretch of houses of about 100m

Telkom technician came around, he found an issue on the line somewhere in the area, fixed it and my SNR is back to where it was, seems stable for now. :)

Also thanks to TelkomZA for helping out. :)
