So how much can I download?

Not in the mood for maths so I thought I'd get help from you guys! ;) I have now decided to give Mweb a try.

My Grabit downloads are running at a constant 18-20KB/s. So let's call it 19KB/s. Not sure what will happen to these speeds during the day. If I theoretically started downloading every evening at 6pm until about 7 am the next day (13 hours) and from 6pm on a Friday until 7am on a Monday (61 hours... I think! :) ), what would I be able to download in a 30 day month? Assuming of course these downloads speeds remain constant.
 
If you count four weeks you'll get 30 GB and 916 MB, if you maintain an average speed of 19KB/s. But that will be 28 days, reasonable enough.
 
28 days is actually a more realistic number, because you probably won't download EVERY single night of the month.
 
19 * 60 * 60 = 68400 /1024 = 66.8 MB/h
So over 4 weeks.
mon-thurs 13*4 = 52 hours +4 = 208h
4 weekends 4*61 = 244h
208+244 =452h

Thus 66.8* 452= 30193.6 MB ~ 29.5 GB
That leaves you with 2 days of the month extra so safe to say over 30GB

Yip, I got it to be around 30Gb too but seemed lower than everyone else has been stating. I realise they must have been on 4Mb lines. Still not sure this uncapped is the way to go for me then.... it costs R219. I could get a Telkom All Access 3Gb account which includes 20Gb of local for R149. I could then use the full 23Gb to download from the SAIX news servers at speeds of around 35KB/s and get what I want at twice the speed with only 7Gb less than my constant downloads on the Mweb uncapped. I could then throw in about 3Gbs from Afrihost for surfing international at a cost of R87. Total of only R236 and I am not much worse off but with quicker downloads.....

I could actually lower my overall cost and get a DO2 package.

Let me test drive this for a month and then make that call.... or see what Telkom offers soon....

Actually you are wrong. You can download 24/7 but you will not get full speed all the time. That is why the question was asked.



The figures arrived at earlier will need to be revised though as I am now only getting speeds of 11KB/s and we thought it might be 19KB/s all weekend. Although I did see speeds of around 30KB/s early this morning so perhaps they will cancel each other out.
 
Keep in mind that there's maintenance going on at the moment so the network is a little unpredictable.
 
I have Afrihost 384 and get 30+ KBps on grabit with a paid news server.

Done over 30GB and speeds still good.

I'm actually thinking they might be a better option... the calculations below show that I am unlikely to go over 30Gbs in a month anyway so I should get very little degradation of service. Are your speeds 30KB/s+ all the time, or only over the weekend?

I am also with AH with 384. Throttling kicked in for me as soon as I reached 33GB. I had 3GB package before I switched - so I moved to the throttling profile when I moved past 30GB on the uncapped package. Haven't experienced speeds above 24KB/s on international news since then. When I was in the 15-30GB profile the shaping was not bad at all, was always above 35KB/s.

@Brawler: Have you had a capped package that you upgraded to uncapped? I think throttling starts once you reach capped package + 30GB. Not sure though.

That is a lot better than Mweb then. This is what worried me. Everyone was bleating about Afrihost's terms and conditions but in the real world their service is actually better for 384k users. I only joined Mweb so I am on less than 1Gb probably and my speed on Grabit was around 8KB/s all day. I've just bounced up to 30KB/s a little while ago.

Were you even above 35KB/s during the week?

MWEB Guy said that if you want full speed always on uncapped residential, to buy a 4Mbit account for a 384K line. It may work out less than a business, uncapped 384K product (and no contracts).

That is actually something to consider... maybe even 512 on a 384 will give slightly better speeds. Thanks.

The newsservers you guys use, are they like EasyNews and allow you to DL binaries (ZIPPED up even) or do you use one of these old programs where you pull UUENCODED text and then your program turns that into binary?
In the latter case, you will waste a lot of bandwidth.
