So how the hell do you cook a steak?

:o I'm usually the one who ends up doing the braaing anyway. My friends seem to feel no shame in have a vegan braaimaster :p

Do you every braai vegitables?

Braaied pumkin strips coated with balsimc/olive oil is my favourite. Also I prefer vegeterian sosaties nowdays.

Obviously the upper crust cuts don't need marinade but I tend to try not spend hundreds of rands on 'only the best' meat all the time .......

Well I've found that Woolies steaks are not expensive.

Also I do not buy that cheap brisket that gets passed off as steak. Then again I only braai steak once a month and rather pay an exra R10 per steak (and not hundreds).

But if Iam using marinade, Jimmy is the one and only. Did some ribs with Jimmies last night - nice!!!!

I am a useless South African male it seems, since I have no idea how to braai a steak.

Last night I bought something called a 'Porterhouse steak' and tried to prepare it on the fire and I ended up with something that I may well have cut from the tyre of my car.

What gives?

as my wife just said, after I read this... WERE YOU BORN AND RAISED HERE IN SOUTH AFRICA!!! or id there another excuse???

Just not much of a meat-eater really and I generally used to be pissed by the time the coals were ready... :D

i am not a braai person myself but i need to ask the following "what is a steak?".

*it's been such a long time since we could afford meat*

I like my steak still mooing :D

We do it over a moderate heat and cook it for roughly +-5 minutes on each side. When the' blood' comes through it is usually a good indicator to turn it :)

Really depends on how you like your steak mate. Just never leave it for a long time like I am assuming you did?

Same here, going to do a Pork Neck in my COBB braai now. Coated with rosamary, mustard, garlic and lemon juice. My favourite.

(I'm a real braai fanatic: got three different braais)

You know pork steak is very nice...especially the ones from spar already in a marinade

No, it was medium rare - The way I wanted it, just TOUGH.

There is only 1 way to eat steak..

You need to wipe the cows ass and walk it through the kitchen quite quickly....

Put steak over hot coals. DO NOT turn it until the side facing up starts to "sweat". Turn once. When the 2nd side starts to "sweat" remove the steak. It should be a nice medium rare.
This. Only works with fairly thin steaks though. If you try this on a thick steak the one side is charcoal by the time it starts to sweat.

Also surprised by the number of people who say medium temp. If you want to cook it then put it in the oven.;)

Oh and for some reason Spar > Woolworths for steaks at any given price point.

True, but it also depends on what is medium. I forgot to add that I only braai steak with descent briquettes and/or nambian hardekool wood (we don't get Transvaal wood in the Cape). For medium is where you turn 3 peices of meat without your hand starting to cook :)

Have not tried SPAR steaks but I buy all my other meat from SPAR. Surprising how much cheaper SPAR is to Pick 'n Pay (threw too much Checkers meat away in my life to every buy from them). Actually yesterday was the first time in over a year I bought meat from Pick 'n Pay, mainly because PnP had mutton loin chops for R42kg !!!!!!!!!! I bought everything they had - usually its R75-R95 a kg!

I know. I'm a big meat eater and in the last 5years my budget has remained the same (R500 pm) till this year when I was able to push it to R750pm. I've learnt to eat less (R500 for two peps 5yrs back was a lot of meat) but rather buy better cuts and buy what is on special from SPAR. Woolies steaks sets us back R100 a braai but we don't eat out anymore (SPUR dose not count) because of my 3yr old.

Then again a descent steak is R100-120 per person (Cattle Baron) in a restaurant.

No but apparently I'm not very good at making sarcasm obvious enough.;)

I was saying that on medium temp you end up cooking the steak more than braaing it. In which case such infidels might as well go cook it in an oven.

You won't catch me using an oven for a steak.:D

High temp is also better if you have concerns about parasites in the meat. i.e. 7 mins at a high temp will kill more resilient bugs than 14 mins at low/medium temp.

EDIT: Farmers market is teh awesome. Fillet @ steak prices. :D

i get the wife to buy the cheapest mince and i move it around my plate and make it look like a chop.

I tend to agree!! Another thing is why WOULD YOU WANT TO PUT MARANADE ON YOUR STEAK!!!

Salt and pepper on a whole fillet and then on the braai!! That is the BEST!! The thick side is medium and the thin side is well done for those that like it that way....
