It has finally happened, my parents are going to become grandparents for the first time in May next year. :D The Girlfirend and I have been together for four years now and I have just started thinking about medical aid and all the other serious stuff.

I wanted to know if the baby qualifies for medical aid benefist once its born, or can get cover for the unborn baby. I am just thinking about all the checkups before birth and all.

There is just so much to do, but I am not freaking out yet. :o

Congrats, I know if you have medical before you fall pregnant medical covers everything. However friends of mine fell pregnant without medical and they could not get medical after the fact to cover the birth etc. But it also depends on your client profile etc. etc. I would guess.

EDIT: I hope you come right, birth can be expensive.
 
Oh oh another one who has left the medical aid too late!

If you are saying that your GF and you are not yet on medical aid and you are wanting to get on one to cover the pregnancy then you needed to do that 3 months before she fell pregnant. Most medical aids have a 12 month waiting period on pregnancy.

Is your GF on medical aid already?
 
Congratulations! :D

If your girlfriend is less than 12 weeks she can join Fedhealth medical scheme which will cover her pregnancy BUT she must join through the broker Optivest otherwise the pregnancy will be excluded for a period of 12 months after joining. After the baby is born he/she can be registered either on her or your medical aid.

Good luck & enjoy being around a hormonal, pregnant woman! :twisted:

Sad but true. We we're lucky - GF was on my med aid for about 3/4 months before she fell pregnant.

Congrats... late on the med aid, start saving, you don't want her to deliver at a public facility.
 
Don't listen to the naysayers (re medical aid). I am talking out of experience re Fedhealth. Contact Optivest and discuss with them.

Heck no! My mother is a nurse at a public clinic (and no, she was not on strike :p), she would kill me if I ever think about going that route.

I am fully aware of medical aids offering special offers which is why I used the wording "most medical aids" when referring to the waiting periods. I know of many medical aids that offered special offers where they waived waiting periods. These medical aids soon learnt an expensive lesson when many members left the medical aid shortly after the birth was paid for.... have you seen the financial state of medical aids on this country at the moment? I have just perused the latest report.....

EDIT : And out of interest I was just on the phone to Fedhealth. They state they have a 12 month waiting period for pregnancy if the person was not on a medical aid before. I mentioned what was being said on here but they reiterated what I mentioned about people joining and then having the baby and leaving. They said they allowed pregnant people to join at one point but they stopped this in January last year..... may I ask when your personal experience was?

I am fully aware that you said "most medical aids". There are posters that stated it as a fact that she won't be able to get onto a medical aid that will cover her pregnancy and birth. Those are the one's I was addressing.

Medical aid premiums are exorbitant, so I don't really care if their financials are up to **** and people get rid of the medical aid after the birth. I stayed with Fedhealth for three years after the birth of my son, before joining Essential Med which must be the most affordable medical aid out there and worth every little penny I pay for it.

I just chatted to Optivest too and they confirm that there was a special offer at one point but they too have stopped it. The lady did confirm that it may be worthwhile contacting Fedhealth direct and not a brokerage, like Optivest, as she has heard that on occasion they will allow a very healthy, young person to join is they are less than 6 weeks pregnant but this is reviewed on a case by case basis. As much as you do not care about their financial affairs, medical aids are desperate for young healthy members to help with their solvency. This may be an attempt by Fedhealth to get them to join and hopefully stay on.
