I did my motorcycle learners license. Went to the local bike shop and got myself a 150cc Big Boy Scooter.

I was only once a passenger on a motorcycle for about 5 minutes and never drove one before.

Even leaving the bike shop I didn't know how to start the bike. Did a test drive in the parking lot and off I went.

Taking all or most of the advice from Copa's thread helped a lot.

I only travel to work and back about a 30km round trip. This is usually a 2 hour trip with the car now it's like a 30 minutes with the scooter.

You went from not knowing how to start the bike to lane splitting so fast? Mkay

Same, and I took a long coastal rode home at the time - Went off the road at one stage, as I hadn't quite got to grips with how it turned corners. :D

I'm now at the point where I want to upgrade:

This would be perfect for me too. Getting in and out of Sandton can be a nightmare.

Safe travels lad. Safe travels.

What bike is this Copa ? It looks like a solid machine.

Gratz.. Drive safe... I never had the guts to pull the trigger on one of these for safety reasons.

Thanks! Safety is my biggest concern as well. While lane splitting I felt my balls go up into my body.

No. I didn't immediately started lane splitting took a day or so of riding behind cars. The hardest part was telling myself that my body and bike can fit between 2 cars... while their side mirrors gravitates towards me like little moons.

Your upgrade looks like it swallowed my scooter. :erm:
I don't think I would like to go faster than 80 km/h

would it be possible for someone to post a link to the thread mentioned in the first post.

Be safe OP.i hope u have got all you riding gear.never skimp on gear mate.

Thanks. Gear- Helmet, gloves and jacket? I still need water resistant pants though. Currently not sure if I'll brave a rainy day.
I've survived the Cape Doctor last week.

As Paul said, boots and proper pants. Not sure what sort of boots you'll be using on a scoot though. For pants, check out Xkulcha's gear. Things like Easy Overs or the Biker-X jeans. They're a bit pricey (R1000+ pp) though.

Decent Helmet, a good jacket and 2 pairs of gloves (summer & Winters)
oh, and a scarf or something for winter ... a lot of space between the jacket and helmet where cold air can get in!

I have been riding motorcycles for years. I just can't sit in a car in traffic. So come rain or shine, I use my bikes to commute to work and back.

Haven't had any rainy weather yet for the last couple of weeks, so no need for the water resistant gear yet. Thanks, will follow the advice when I have the cash. Water resistant gloves, pants and boots next.

In the other thread some said "everyone wants to kill you" - I found this to be true. Bakkies/Fortuners, pedestrians, dogs. The roads I travel is 80 km/h max and I do that easily but it seems its not fast enough. And cars sometimes force their way too close.

I love the R50.00 to fill my tank and it last around 1½ weeks. So about R200.00 p/m for 30km per day.
