So I drove into a roadblock.

I have commented on here a few times over a few threads about paying fines. As everyone is aware it is almost Christmas time and the various Metro police units have kicked their operations into high gear.

I was under the impression that you have to pay your fines if you get stopped at a roadblock This apparently isn't true.

So the guy (friendly, but slightly overweight, who doesn't have a good concept of personal space) took my license and after 5 minutes brought me a list with 10 item on it. lucky 4 of those where duplicates because they check your license and car.

This where the personal space issue came into it. He leans into the window really close with this paper on the steering weel and then proceed to explain each line item to me very slowly whilst pointing with his finger. I sort of got it by just looking at the paper and definitely understood after the first one, so depending how you look at it this step is completely unnecessary, or it is what actually gets people to pay up.

Now the negotiations start.
Firstly I tell him that I am not aware of this fines, I have not received them, which is mostly true. I have some old fines but I'm definitely not sure if they would match up with this list.
Secondly I attempted the poverty technique.
To my surprise the was semi-successful, my good friend from above explained to me that I should just, maybe, pay some of them. The older ones which is the most likely to result in a warrant of arrest being issued for which I would have to go to court and there would be some additional charges. Now I've been getting threatening SMSs for some time(years and years) already so I'm not to scared and will probably pay then(never).

So I thought okay, at least this gets me a discount, need to go tell the person in the trailer I can only afford two of them right now.

But the door has been opened. It is now obviously not mandatory to pay everything and he mentioned going to court.

So I kindly remind him that, I have never been to court for these fines, never received a summons and now I'm not even sure if these fines are valid.

It is at this point he allows me to drive off after wishing me a lovely day and I return the favour with a kind greeting aswell.

Disclaimer. Not legal advice, I'm not a lawyer.
Pay your TV license fines it's the right thing to do.
If you get arrested and raped in jail it is not my fault.

My nose started to bleed slightly after I read that..
Shame man. I also struggle with nosebleeds but mine is because of dry air or pollen which gives me quite extreme hayfever.

I would seriously recommend you go see a doctor if you a nose bleed after struggling through a few badly constructed sentences and grammar errors.

Sounds exactly like the dodgy uncle at the family Christmas. Every family has one like that :)

You would prefer the uncensored version where riety blew on some BBC?
That's not really my thing. You kinda need to know the person you are dealing with.

If the cops want sexual favors they normally go and hunt down the R50 prozies.

If they stop me they are likely looking for R50 bribe, I guess to use as a paying customer. So maybe I can contribute indirectly.

Well he did let you go. And you don't mention paying any money. There was only one other option...

I think they can only hold you if there is a warrant issued for the fine.

So many people don't know their rights. Contrary to what the cops will have you believe, a fine (or more accurately an infringement notice) is only an allegation of wrongdoing. Until you admit your guilt, or are found guilty by a court of law, you are under no obligation whatsoever to pay the fine because no one has proved your guilt. The only instance in which the cops can arrest you for an outstanding fine, is when there is a warrant out for your arrest for contempt of court because you either ignored a summons to attend court, or never received the summons in the first place because the server of the summons illegally forged your signature or that of someone else to prove delivery. This happens a lot.

You don’t want to pay your fines but other people must pay for electricity.
If they don't pay their electricity/fines, then why should we?
What happened to equality? Only useful if you can score something?
Hypocrite.
