Hi Johan.

Did you mean 4mbps uncapped or 4mbps with a 1gig cap?

The post is a bit confusing.

Mweb is one of the better uncapped providers imo, but they are not without fault. Openweb Gold is also very good should you be willing to pay a few extra rands...(R200)

Browsing and email on mweb have been fine since I have been with them. So very few complaints from my side (except that since the seacom outage I haven't been able to connect to mweb news server.)

Good morning Spyk3r

How are you connecting to the news server and are you getting any specific errors when trying to connect to the mweb news server? Please also provide me your MWEB Email address.

Hi Mweb Guy,

I have been connecting via Alt.Binz, and using news.mweb.co.za as the address.

It connects, I download one thread and then it diconnects and cannot reconnect for a while and this has been happening since the seacom outage.

Will Pm you my email address.

Thanks :)

The major pitfall is the very heavy shaping most of the time.

If you download from sites like Rapidshare or use torrents, then you will be affected. Even after 1 or 2am, the speeds are still a good deal lower than they should be.
The shaping makes it bad for games as well, despite their claims to the contrary. You can expect high ping numbers from Mweb.

I tested the Mweb 4MB uncapped service last week and it was no where near Cybersmart 4MB uncapped. The speedtests will give you 3.5MB but when opening webpages that were way slower then the Cybersmart account. I was gatvol of Cybersmart and decided to try out another ISP hence I went to MWEB.
After complaining to them about the speeds, this was their response:
"Then it’s a very good thing that you checked it before you signed up. If you need further information or assistance, please feel free to contact me.
They even called me and I noted to them that it's not the ADSL line but the Data provider issue. They weren't really bothered.

Not sure why I don't experience heavy shaping. Torrents, maybe during the day, but after 5pm, it goes to the top speed.

I download from other sites as well, and have not been shaped as yet. I tried Afrihost uncapped as well, but find that once you reach 40 - 50gb, your download speeds are pathetic. Afrihost I find is best capped and MWeb best uncapped.

Same as me, I have no problems ;)

That might be the problem here - I am on the 1mb uncapped account. I have no complaints as well.

Their attitude is legendary as well.

They also tend to blame Telkom for every problem until you prove otherwise.

Look, if people on, say, 384kbs don't mind having their top speed reduced from around 40k to 20k tops then that's for them. If you don't play games much, don't torrent a lot, don't Rapidshare or Newsgroup then it's passable. Personally, the experience was very disappointing, especially since it degraded over time and I was told this was because more people were joining!
