I haven't really purchased a Phone before so I dont know much about contracts etc. Every phone I owned was a pass down from a family member. Its now time that I need a new phone. I am more interested in the phone than actual phone calls/Data bundles etc.

Which contract do I take? I think a contract without the phone calls/Data etc would be best or do I need a contract with data etc? because I would want to use Email/Facebook/Browse internet and other apps.

Regarding jail-breaking the phone. Is there a way of doing this on the iPhone 4 and is it safe? Will I lost warranty if I jail-break the phone?

You can buy one for like R5000-6000. If you want a contract, most people recommend MTN - Vodacom hardly ever have stock. MTN have two contract options. Yes you're gonna want some data. You can use the Cell C network on an iPhone 4 too for the cheapest data.

Jailbreaking doesn't void your warranty. It's pretty safe. But before you do that, get yourself a US iTunes account and an iTunes voucher and enjoy the App store - it's a great experience.

Thanks :) I plan on getting the MTN contract. It seems to be the best option for me at the moment. I am currently have a Vodacom SIM at the moment though. I need to port this over. Any idea if there is a once off fee though? This isn't on the MTN webpage.

Don't waste your money, get a DHD with a data bundle.

DHD?

Does the iPhone have GPS?

Yeah the iPhone 4 has the quickest GPS I've ever seen. A lot of people will tell you to get an Android phone. In my opinion iPhone is better.

Android is great. So go read up on it a little, also MTN sucks, so rather go the cell c route if you can, they seem to be the only network who wants to actually do something for consumers. I have an HTC Desire, and I am very happy with it, if you can wait a while, the motorola atrix looks great, although it may only be here by next decade. So, HTC desire HD sounds like a good option:D

Sent from my HTC Desire using MyBroadband Android App

Rather wait for the iPhone 5 or the LG Optimus 3D/SGS 2 running Andoid.

MTN's iphone 4 contracts are pretty cool cause they subsidize i bigger amount than Vodacom, so you don't pay in anything, even on their Anytime 100 package.
Just go to a MTN shop and they can show you a list of different packages and data bundle you can choose from.

Data is definitely necessary. The bigger bundle you buy, the cheaper you pay per MB.
minimum would work out R1 per MB
Without a data bundle 1MB would normally cost you R2

since i got my iphone 4 i pretty much don't use any airtime at all.
With whatsapp i chat with friends, you get some free sms's but I use lots of data
I don't watch youtube videos, open big pictures and that kind of stuff unless i'm using wifi every day at work.
Just don't download large sized files and you'll probably get through the month with 150MB-300MB.

As for jailbreaking your iphone, yes it does void your warranty but remember it's only firmware. If something goes wrong, just restore the original firmware if you can and apple would never know that you have ever jailbroken your device.

iPhone has a HUUUGGEEE selection of downloadable apps so if the iPhone doesn't have a certain feature from the get-go, you can be assured that out of all the 360000+ apps, you'll get an app for the feature you want!
i mean there are even apps to remote start your car! haha

TomTom & Navigon are some great GPS apps, and if works great!
iPhone games are without the absolute best!
check out games like Infinity Blade, Rage HD, Dead Space, Need for speed Shift & Hot Pursuit, Guitar hero, just to name a few.

but yeah the iphone 5 will release in June and probably be in SA by September so if it's not urgent to get a phone now, you absolutely won't regret waiting for the iPhone 5

The biggest reason why not to get an Android is that it will require that you troll the iPhone forum for at least 2 hrs a day to make yourself believe that your phone is better.

Get the iPhone 4 and know that you have the best phone on the market....

I use about 500mb of data but i do watch a few online movies etc a few times a week and have all push notifications and email push on all the time.

It all depends on your circumstance and what you prepared to pay or lock yourself into...

HUGE +1 on the trolling.... I was actually thinking about that just last night...

I actually met someone once that got kinda ticked off when I was telling a friend about Gorillaz recording a whole album with the iPad. Then he started trolling in real life about Android this & that...

But it's like this one guy said in an article I read, other device makers are trying super hard to match specs and stuff but they're missing the point. The ecosystem Apple has created, all the apps, and the intergration between their devices are what makes everything so much more fun.

I think thats exactly what the Android Trolls are missing the point on... No one that owns an iPhone says it has the best CPU, Best memory, most Megapixel.

What the iPhone does is simply the smartphone package into a user friendly device that is stable and allows you to install apps that are relevant and applicable to what you want to do with the phone...

I love my iPhone to bits and cant imagine going to another manufacturer, but one day if my needs from a smartphone change and apple cannot accomodate it, i will need to look elsewhere...

yeah, specs don't say everything, the OS also has a big role in everything. iOS is very polished and no one can argue with that.
I also love my iPhone and I can also not even imagine using another phone. Luckily from all the apps out there and then all the jailbreak tweaks I just can't think that there would be a feature I'm not gonna have.

Yes Androids have some cool features here & there but it's nothing I long for with my iPhone, and unfortunately for Android, integration just doesn't fit with open source. As much as Google or anybody else absolutely HATES to admit it and would almost die before they do so, it is actually a fact.
Just ask developers. And for me the integration is an extra HUGE PLUS, and probably the reason why I would always stay with Apple products.
I've struggled more than enough with Windows and different brand phones/devices to just get absolutely fed up of "separateness" between devices.

I mean, just try getting a Sony Ericsson or Nokia to consistently tether to a PC....

I got my iPhone today :D

I am messing around a bit...its sooooo awesome :D I will probably have a lot of questions in the next few days. for starters how do I create a US iTunes account?

Nice! :-)
Heres a great guide hot to create a free US itu es account
http://www.igeek.co.za/2010/10/18/get-a-us-itunes-account-in-south-africa/

You cannot pay directly with a credit card on an US itunes account but you can buy itunes gift vouchers and then in you go into iTunes and choose the redeem code option and enter your gift vouchers code and then you can buy stuff.
I've bought vouchers from www.evopoints.co.za and it worked out great! Got the code instantly and bought some music from itunes US!

Hope you enjoy it! Its been 3 months since i got my iPhone and i still can't put it down! The games are wicked cool! And there are so many cool apps to choose from! I recommend subscribing to a couple of apple tech blogs to hear about new apps and reviews cause there are ALOT of apps!
Macstories, cult of mac, the unofficial apple webblog, appadvice are a just a couple of them.

Feel free to ask questions.
Enjoy
Cheers cheers

iPhone will work on all networks. Just remember to ask the provider for data packages. Alternatively turn off data in your settings and connect to wifi... I also.agree that you must get a US iTunes account. Way more apps! Enjoy the phone... You'll never look back
