dont worry about the haters.. haters gona hate.. at the end of the day it was Apple that made a truly remarkable device in the iphone 4,its iphone perfected. Apple deserves credit really and apparently the iPhone 5 will have the A5 processor which is a Dual Core chip thats already in the iPad 2 *thumbs up*

I am thinking of Jail breaking my iPhone but how do I go about doing this? Is it safe? Is there a way I can restore my phone to default if the need arises. At the moment I have iOS 4.2.1. Should I upgrade to 4.3 and then Jailbreak?

Regarding development does the phone need to be jailbroken to try apps on it?

Then, jailbreaking is safe. You'll find, as you go that there are a couple of trusted sources for jailbreaking... The top of the list IMO is the Dev-Team http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ They release what they call a PwnageTool with every OS update from Apple. PwnageTool re-builds and creates a custom IPSW file (iPhone OS files are called IPSW files). You "restore" your phone from the custom IPSW file and that (with the exception of a couple of things you'll need from Cydia) is pretty much all there is to the actual process of jailbreaking.

You can restore your phone to default with the Apple IPSW at any time at all.

DON'T upgrade to 4.3 just yet..! A detail I haven't mentioned yet is the tethered and untethered jailbreaks.
Tethered jailbreaks are usually out first, within days (or hours) of a software updates from Apple. The problem with them is that you need to connect your phone to your computer to boot it... every time... It's a pain if your battery dies...
Untethered jailbreaks (no need to connect to your computer to boot) take a little longer to be released but are always well worth the wait. There is no untethered jailbreak for 4.3 just yet... 4.2.1 is where we are at the moment ('till the weekend that is, if some reports are to be believed) so if you'd like to go ahead with a 4.2.1 jailbreak, there should be no problems at all.
I'd imagine you can check the iPhone forums on MyBB for news on untethered 4.3 jailbreaks otherwise just keep checking the Dev-Team blog.

When you do jailbreak your phone, you'll have Cydia installed. Cydia is an app that lets you browse and download applications for a jailbroken iPhone. You'll also need Cydia to get AppSync and Installous, which allow you to load "cracked" apps on your phone... To get this all going, open Cydia, hit the "Manage" tab at the bottom of the screen, select "Sources", select "Edit" at the top right of the screen, select "Add" at the top left, type in http://cydia.hackulo.us and hit add. When it's all done, search for AppSync and Installous and install them... All done.
You can browse and download apps on your phone in Installous just like you do in Apple's own App Store app. AppSync runs in the background and allows you to install those apps on your phone.
You can also check out the website apptrackr on your machine... You can download applications from there and drag them into your iTunes library to install them on your phone that way if you prefer to do it that way.

With that guide and the firmware file you're set for a jailbreak.

Now, you will unfortunately not be able to restore back to the original 4.2.1, now that 4.3 is released because you need SHSH blobs for that specific firmware version on that device, from Apple which is impossible to get once a new firmware version is released. You're just a little too late. Sorry

To get SHSH blobs, download a program called tinyumbrella

Just connect your phone and click save shsh blobs.
So if you save the shsh blobs for 4.3 now, you will always be able to restore or downgrade to that firmware again, on that device.
You should always save shsh blobs for any firmware that is released.

Don't worry, everything is much more simple than it sounds.

DO NOT, and i repeat DO NOT upgrade to 4.3 at the moment, not until there is a new jailbreak released for it, which won't be too long now. Possibly about 2 weeks. as soon as Apple releases 4.3.1.

A jailbroken iphone is less secure than a non-jailbroken iphone IF you don't change the root password.
All jailbreaks change the root password and they all have the same password, 'alpine'.
It's very easy to change the password after the jailbreak by using simple guide. Change the password and your iphone is just as secure as a non jailbroken iphone.
Not that there are many threats to the iphone to begin with.

A jailbreak allows code that is not signed by apple to run on the device. So whether it's your own jailbreak apps or whatever, if it's not signed officially by apple and distributed on the app store, jailbreak is the way you can run these apps.

I tried saving SHSH blobs with Tinyumbrella. It finished but I get the following messages in the log:

From that report, 4.3's blobs don't appear to be saved.
Is that the FULL report


On the left where it says "recent device" click on your device and go into the "advanced" tab.

There's a option to set the folder.
"Save SHSH Directory", set to another one you can find easily if you want. then you can keep backups cause the blobs aren't always available from cydia's server until the servers are refreshed which doesn't seem to happen alot, cause only 1 of my saved blobs appear in cydia, so keep them backup up locally.

The TSS server does NOT need to be running. You are only gonna use it when you want to upgrade your firmware while preserving your phones current baseband.
If you aren't planning to use another carriers sim in your phone, you don't need to worry about basebands and unlocks.

You're running the latest tinyumbrella?
Could you connect your device again, click Save SHSH and check if it saves 4.3


You should see this if it's succesful

"You have saved your iPhone4 4.3 (8F190) SHSH locally and the request was sent to CYDIA. This means that CYDIA DOES have your SHSH. Do NOT bug semaphore about the Cydia home page showing this version."

But yes, it can only saves blobs for firmware that currently gets signed by Apple. Unfortunately.
But from now on, just get all the blobs when they are signed by apple, beta as well.

Congrats.

But that's weird, every time i jailbroke my phone, the jailbreak program asked me for the firmware file of the firmware you're jailbreaking. But keep the firmware files when you want to restore. It's always handy to keep them locally.
