question when buying a domain name how do I set up an email on that domain name?

Depends where you host it [the domain] and on what platform you are hosting. For example, if you go with HostMonster (who incidentally have a 50% off on domain names) then you can host on a linux server and you will thus get access to your hosting by means of CPanel.

Email accounts are setup through CPanel.
