...now I would like to install a theme. Is it possible to download a "full" theme pack that includes everything i.e icons, backgrounds, splash screen, login manager etc.?

I don't want to download them all seperately :o

Cheers.

1.10? The old version :)

Postman, did you install ubuntu, with the gnome desktop; or kubuntu with the much-better KDE desktop?

If it's the straight ubuntu, you might want to look at something at http://www.gnome-look.org/. You'll find plenty of themes and instructions for installing them there.

****e, I obviously meant 7.10 :o

Yeah it's Ubuntu with Gnome. I've checked that site, but I would prefer to download a full theme pack, instead of downloading all the different parts like icons, splash, login etc. Is that possible?

Thanks.

In the left hand nav of that site select GDM themes, if you're using Gnome desktop manager, of choose the appropriate style if you're using metacity or the other various options.

Thanks.

I downloaded some themes and extracted them.

Just can't seem to install them now - when I drag into Appearance Properties, it says "File format invalid" :(

*edit*

Got one installed - an icon theme pack. Seems the GDM's aren't installing.

I don't use Gnome,, so I'm not really too familiar with the themes for that. I do know that with KDE and themes from Kde-look that I've often had to rename themes, they seem not to package them very well. For example the themes that I use are for Emerald, so I download a file called MyTheme.tar.gz, or just Mytheme, and have to rename it to MyTheme.emerald for it to work in the theme installer.

So Postman how do you find UBUNTU 7.10. I got a cd but did not as yet muster the courage to inatall it. What about driver issues?, as we see a simple "theme" gave you some hassles already? What about office, e-mail, internet, etc.

CAn it be installed as dual boot system with XP,Vista?

It's decent. Hasn't exactly grabbed me yet, though. Takes a bit of getting used to, although it is user-friendly and there is lots of help.

Yeah I have it installed so I can boot either XP or Ubuntu. Installation is very easy, and rather quick :)

I've yet to try the OpenOffice programs.

Yes it can. It installs the Grub boat-loader into your boot-disk's master boot record, then creates a boot-menu and normally automatically adds the XP OS as an option, alongside the Ubuntu options.

For most desktop PC's, drivers are not an issue (with the exception of the latest 8800GT cards). You will have a GUI, with sound and networking working fine.

The basic installation includes email and web-browsing apps and you'd need to install a package like OpenOffice.Org, using the easy Synaptic package manager.

This is done automatically. So for me, I wasn't asked about the existing Vista install - then when I rebooted there it was.

A few things that do not work just yet

I recently re-installed WindowsXP on my IBM Thinkpad T42. I did not make a copy of the Recovery CD and therefore could not get anything working. So after 45 mins on the phone with IBM/Lenovo support, downloading drivers from the website I just gave up.

So a few days ago I downloaded Ubuntu 7.10 and installed it. So far most things are working and I'm very, very impressed with the easy of installation. The following things are not working:

1. Soundcard
2. 3G USB modem (Vodacom)
3. Accessing my own ADSL wireless (could access other wireless networks)

As I get these working I will post updates.

cheers
Ramon

Tried it on a virtual machine - gave it 10gigs to play in and 1gig to play with.

Live cd worked nicely, opted for install based on that, was very disappointed to find myself at a command line scouring the internet for solutions to a screen resolution related problem that wouldn't allow me to start the GUI, all this within the first 10min after installing.

There may be *more* that works out of the box but its incorrect IMO to say that *Ubuntu* works out of the box ...giving this one a pass too.

picked up my usb HSDPA/3G modem without a single problem first time so I am not to sure what drivers issues you may be having. Linux has more driver support by default than any other OS. Even funny bluetooth dongles and weird stuff like that are always picked up.

Regarding your adsl wireless network. I also had some hiccups. I had to go to command line and nano /etc/networking/interfaces or something like that.

Try ubuntuforums for answers.

It worked out of the box for me.
