the best way to gym is actually being there consistently...

3 sets, 8-12 reps should be a good start but everyones body and goals are different, you should check www.fitren.com, form a basic work out, learn what works for you in the gym and what doesnt, learn how to use proper form etc...

but if you dont get your diet right from the beginning its just going to be a waste of time

Yea, one thing i can tell you is don't try and be a hero and do more than your body can manage when you first start.

I agree with killadoob. The first most critical thing is dont go mad with the weights from the start. Otherwise you'll look like C-3PO with serious/painful movement restrictions.

And definitely make sure what you want to get out of it and adjust your diet accordingly.
Search the web and ask around for a proper workout routine.

From personal experience if you want to make it all work get your @ss to the gym when you need to, come hell or high water.

Enjoy

Exactly that ... you can't think "oh, i'll skip today and make up for it" ... its good that you've started and want a change, and by being consistent you'll slowly but surely week after week do more and more with ease. GOOD LUCK!!

A routine only works if it aligns to your goals. One of the best routines for me was the 'body for life' one. 6 days a week, every 2nd day you do cardio for 40 mins and the other days you alternate working your upper body, lower body, upper body, lower.... etc.
I did it for 4 months, saw amazing results but alas... fell off the bike :D

While on the subject is gym - how much is too much? 5 times a week of an hour session?
Is an hour too long?

for weights/strength training, 45 mins to 1 hr is perfect....

5-6 times is fine too, just dont work the same body part twice...

Eish - getting in the gym is also meant to be on my "to do list" this year.

I'd like to get into some cardio-vascular and burn as much of my beer belly as possible before I start any major weights.
Need to try and get lean 1st.
The last gym I went to a few years ago - the instructor pushed me on weights and I ended up hurting myself and I just let it go.

But now with the new Virgin Active at Century City open - I've really got no excuse to spend at least 4 times a week there.

/yells out motivational mumbo jumbo

Shake remember that beer belly ain't going anywhere unless you stop drinking beer :)

No point going through all that trouble if your going to continue with the beer :).

Will surely be putting more effort into whiskey :p
But really have to adjust my diet as well.

Ah, it's gym season again after Christmas feasting.

I still think a bicycle is cheaper.

The roads are too dangerous to ride in most places in Cape Town.
Mine is mothballed because a couple of people I know have been swiped off their bikes in the past year and I'm just not keen on taking risk.

+1 for the roads being too dangerous, I wouldn't ride a bike out on the streets in this country

so you guys are not doing cardio and stretching in between then ? just curious be cause as far as i know the stretching part also strengthens your ligaments which is a good thing to have with nice built and strong muscles. Obviously card gets you fit and not just the build part....
