Get a personal trainer! At least for the first few months.

Their not thaaat expensive and your workouts are tailored to suit your fitness level and goals.

PM me if you need a recommendation, my personal trainer is probably the most experienced and qualified in SA.

I also recently joined the gym and they are really pushing the idea of using a personal trainer. The cost however, is what discouraged me from the idea.

IF I did get a personal trainer (for the first few months), how many times per week would I need a session with the personal trainer? Can I only have 1 session per week, with the personal trainer and gym the other 4-5 sessions on my own?

What is a average price per session in your experience? If I buy 8 sessions, it costs me R2000. Is that a good price?

Our gym is under management and being given an extensive overhaul.

They are getting new equipment for the circuit, which will be fully computerised. The only way I can explain it is this way: you get assessed by a trainer, a programme is devised for you and you then get something like a memory stick with your specific programme entered onto it.

When you insert the memory stick into a particular piece of equipment, it reads it and automatically adjusts the resistance/weight to the level in your specific programme.

I hate the gym around this time, there are hundreds of new ppl who have a new years resolution who do nothing but chat and get in the way......i further hate the fact that ppl find it amusing to book all the squash courts / spinning etc and not pitch....

They should implement a negative point scoring system.

At our gym, you need to put down a deposit of R50 when booking, which you lose if you don't pitch, but get back if you do!

thats a mission..., they should simply have a card scanner, scan ur card to book, scan when u pitch, if u fail to pitch, u get fined automatically, or are banned from booking for a month etc...

These idiots book the same slots every day for the whole month, somehow they get to the booking sheets before i can....it is unbelievably annoying....
end of rant

So Dutchman.

Are you still going to the gym ?
If you are then you should already be ower the worst. The fiirst week is the hardest to get into routine and your body is killing you. From then on it only gets easier and easier. Your body becomes used to the punishment and you don't get that killing muscle pains any more.

i find the worst bit is actually getting to the gym (and the first 5 minutes of any cardio unless its squash), after that the only thing more relaxing is an ice cold imported beer....

so, any thoughts on personal training?

I would love to have a PT on my payroll.

One who knocks on my door at 06:00 every morning and shout at me to get my tracksuit on and hit the gym!

I used one for a few sessions at the gym and he really did push me hard ... when I think I can do no more, he happily gives me another 15 reps :D

It does get too expensive though, so I am on my own now.

so, any thoughts on personal training?

its hard for me to say, i have had training in the form of professional coaching on and off court which is obviously beneficial.....If ur just trying to lose xmas fat then it might be a waste..

I guess if u need motivation, and dont really know what exercises to do, then give it a bash for a while until u get into a routine...

I think with some research and patience, u could do it for free? PT is getting expensive and for the most part losing weight is nto an exact science. Remeber the ppl at the gym wearing the gym logo shirts? You should feel free to ask them questions, its what they are there for, not jsut to stand around looking bored or to replace weights. If i think i might be doing an exercise wrong, or need help spotting, i ask them. Most of em are plain happy to be putting their sports sciences degree to use TBH...

I got 2 personal training sessions for free when I joined the gym. I am going for my second and final one tonight. The main purpose of personal training for me would be because I wouldn't know what exercises to do.

Maybe, instead of going through a routine tonight, I should ask the personal trainer to work out a 5-day program for me, which I could then follow on my own. Then, when I feel I need more help, I could ask "the guys wearing the gym logo shirts"! :)

Thanks for the advice.

that seems to be the general reasoning for Pt, but if u google for a training programme, u would find quite a few, with detailed instructions etc. Besides most of the machines today are getting to be pretty close to free weight training, and are incredibly easy to follow.

Ur paying gym fees to include facilities and for some help... help and PT are different!

good luck with it!

a PT is there to make sure you press yourself beyond your thresshold.

It's easy to do 3 sets of 10 reps or what ever and your body is saying no more. You just oblige and move to do shoulders or what ever. a PT will make sure you do one more set than what your body is able to do. Always. They will make sure that if your body can only do 200 sit-ups that you do 220 :D

That is what they get paid to do :p
