So my PC finally died..

Yea wait for ati to release their new cards, yes you can wait forever but i reckon ati's pricing is crazy. Still 4k for a 5870

As mentioned 2 260's will nail it for the same price if you got connections :D.

I do agree that a good gpu is important,i am intending on using multiple cards in future. I was also shocked about the ati story.. Amd really needs to catch up these days

I must say I would also consider the 460 1GB route then SLi later.. They scale phenomenally well!! It's insane! Better than ATI/AMD thats for sure! I've actually thought of trading my card with sum1 or selling it to get 2x460 but meh, I still like single card setups...

Oh ya forgot to ask, what screen res are you running?? No point in getting a 470 if you on 1024x768 :p

I saw quite a performance increase between the 470 and 460.
I am using full hd, on a 24".hopefully will extend that to 2.

I'm not sure if a 460 can handle full HD on it's own in Crysis and the like. I think a 470 might be a better option for you.

Nice :) so ya you essentially got these choices:
460 1GB ~R2.5k
5850 ~R2.9k
470 ~ R3.2k
5870 ~R3.9k
give or take a few depending on the make.

Crysis at his res http://www.techspot.com/review/299-palit-inno3d-geforce-gtx-460/page7.html (scroll down a bit)

But you should be looking at DX11 games as that is where the fermi architecture shine..
460/5850/470 are all really good choices and You wont go wrong with either imo..

Dam, those are some shocking numbers nakedpeanut!
That is a new game so is slightly understandable. I think will try get best card for the budget.

i5 plus 480 will romp the i7 with a 460.

Give it some thought, even a 6 core amd with a 480 will romp a i7 with a 460. Cpu is not really the biggest thing for gaming, i am not sure why you would spend more on cpu than gpu honestly.

I got to agree an i5 760 OC'd to 3.8GHz would be enough and R1k cheaper. Gives you more to spend on GPU, PSU and more RAM if you wanted.

Nice comparassion of SLI & CrossfireX at minimum and maximum FPS

Hmm, great point killadoob. Compared to what had, most prob won't notice difference between cpu's lol.
Don't think I can stomach paying over 4-5k just for GPU.

It would be a no brainer overseas since its so cheap.
Thanks for all your feedback guys :)

Haha, I still don't get how some of these cards get brought to their knees at some of these games!
From this I can tell that gpu will last awhile.if I get fussy can either turn down res, or get a new card down the line.

Mostly just Crysis tbh, because of the ingame physics etc.
Agree with peanut and killa on multiple points tbh, i5 760 with 470/480 is the way i'd go :)
Only real problem with i5's is i heard they are being abondoned sometime in 2011 and wont be backwards compatible :(
Edit: i mean the chipset 1156, will change

Oh yeah, actually it's happening early in 2011:
Sandy Bridge - Anandtech preview. The CPUs will require a new socket (LGA-1155) and all new motherboards based on Intel’s forthcoming 6-series chipsets. Socket 1366 will also be replaced later next year.

Very nice performance, but not so overclockable. An overclocked 750/760 will still be great.

Dam moore's law. I remember when the LGA775 socket came out, thought it would at least last longer then it did before being phased out.

I think for now sticking with the 1366 socket would be the wisest.

Now to look where to buy these goodies.. :)

I still have 775 XD
I've also got a really good chip, 3.2GHz on stock volts. 775 > all.
