So, this is how "fast" 3G is!

Now that the testing is complete:
TCP/IQ
Download speed 224.39 KBits/sec
28.05 KBytes/sec

Upload speed 313.06 KBits/sec
39.13 KBytes/sec

Hi,

Once again, the upload speeds don't make sense. Something in your test setup is fooling the test.

313Kb/s is 5 times faster than the maximum link speed.

Any idea if you're running any in-line software, proxy, etc?

If you think you're getting unrealistic numbers, nothing beats uploading / downloading a known file size and measure time taken with a stopwatch. But if something is caching the test files, you'll still get the wrong numbers.

Rabbiddog, I'd love to get behind these numbers. Any feedback would be helpful.

I dont run the Dash.
Could be I'm using harley's part of the tower:D

Maybe you plugged your data card in upside down and are therefore getting faster uploads than downloads?

What's worrisome here is that these tests are used to make comparisons. If they provide obviously wrong results, you can still discard the results.

What if they're out by 10-20% or even 50%. Would we know?

ROFL! Service and a sense of humour - MTN's offering had better be pretty special or I'm jumping ship after 10 years just to acknowledge a company that finally takes its service seriously.

Service?!

Having lurked around the ADSL forums for a while, this is the only one where I can sense some sort of effort at delivering service from the SP. I also detect less moaning and groaning here. Can it be that the 3G users are actually reasonably satisfied with what they got? It's almost unbelievable.

I am also considering jumping the Telkom ISDN ship, hence my lurking here on myADSL. I have a question, err, make that 2:
1) What speed can we reasonably expect from 3G? Faster than ISDN 64kb/s ? Much faster?
2) Maybe a silly one, but why do I need a 3G phone if it's my PC that I want to connect?

Regards,
Dries Venter

1) 3G connects at 384kbps and there is various posts regarding speeds. I do find it faster then ISDN

2) There is PCMCIA adapters available for PC if you want to go the PC Card route or else you do need a 3G phone.

We moan and complain but v3g works hard to make us happy and has been impressive regarding feedback etc.
