So what would you do?

Swap for a blk 1. Had the same prob got an white iPad as a pres and I took it back for a blk one

Valid point? But I intend using a cover from the get-go, so maybe not?

That all depends if you will keep the case on forever. I have a back protector which I keep on for a few weeks, then I take it off for a few weeks, then put it back on. The phone feels and looks way better with it off.

I have a love/hate relationship with the case protector :o

Had black since the original iPhone 3G (no other option)
Now I have a white iPhone 4S and iPad 2 -- I prefer it to the black re got a little tired of the same old color, and of course as mentioned you'll be less confused in a crowd of iPhones about which one is yours.

Get yourself an white Apple bumper for it, and you fall in love with your phone a new.

Unfortunately these are not sold in SA by core (for some strange reason) -- so you'll have to order one from a traveling friend or one of the unofficial iPhone vendors in SA.

The bumper you mention - is it a silicon(?) sleeve that simply fits all along the edges of the phone - i.e. nothing at the back or front? If so - I got one inclhded in my courier package, at no charge. Took it out, figured it looked ugly, and popped it in the drawer.

On getting the sim activated, bought a sweet Ozaki(?) cover at the local Voda shop - and popped it on. Took it off the next day, as by then, I had started getting used to the white of the phone, and actually wanted to see more of it. :)

That same day - put the bumper back on, and so it has stayed. Loving the colour - glad that fate dealt me a white one, rather than the requested black! :D

[only schlepp with the bumper, is that it makes it quite tricky to press the lock/sleep button. Don't think the quality of my one (bumper) is the best - so will keep eyes peeled for something similar.]

Glad you're happy now with the color.

Re the case nope it's not the silicon crap -- received that type "free" crap with my iPhone 4 previously, the Apple bumper is well designed, you have aluminum buttons for volume up/down and sleep wake -- feels just like pressing the real buttons (no issues at all).

The shell is hard perfectly molded plastic (no movement when attached to the phone), and very robust, dropped it by accident a few times and no visible damage to phone or case.

The only challenge with the case is some non Apple accessories I.e. the connector is not long enough or is too wide or is too thick for both the casing and the phone -- which hasn't been a issue with any Apple supplied components.
