So when will SABC move to HD on openview?

Wanna watch the MSL cricket and can't bear std defenition.. Any idea to my question above?
 
I don't understand why it is not as well. Watched the Rugby World Cup Final on DstvNow , but wanted to see if SABC was broadcasting it though and decided to have a look on the Openview decoder - feed was directly from Supersport1 with the logo but in horrific SD or whatever resolution that was. Wondering if getting a HD feed from Supersport and broadcasting it in SD would make it even worse then - it looked seriously bad.
 
It is all about capacity. Openview has a single transponder, so they only have a limited amount of capacity, and with a HD chanel using around 3 times the allocation of a SD channel, they would rather use that on their own channels.

I am in the same boat, but I recommend you purchase a DVB-T2 set top box, or maybe you already have a TV with a DVB-T2 tuner. My last two Samsung lounge TVs have had DVB-T2 tuners, and I have two LG TVs, also with DVB-T2 tuners. It has been a standard for awhile now.
Purchase yourself a decent inside set top aerial, and you will get SABC1-3, SABC News, and SABC Sport all in HD. etv also has their main channel on there in HD, but etv Extra, eMovies, eToons are all in SD. That is because they have only been allocated half a multiplex on DVB, whereas SABC has its own Multiplex.

We watched the Rugby on Saturday in HD on SABC2 on the terrestrial aerial, and with this and Openview we have all the local free channels in HD.

I have a One for All SV9360 antenna which is more powerful that the SV9125 which unfortunately seems to be the more prominent one in the stores. Depends of course how far you are away from your transmitter.
 
A little off-topic, my google skills have clearly gone downhill, but I can't for the life of me find the following info:
A. Whether a particular place has a DVB signal now - and if so where to point the antenna at?
https://www.godigitalsa.co.za/ - implies that Cape Town only has an MNET trial ... but then it also says everything will be finished by 2013! And thes sites are just about free STBs... nothing about roll-out or signal?

B. Confirm that it is DVBT2 I should be looking at to receive a signal (and it's not encrypted right?).. and where to buy an antenna? (takealot, price check turn up zero?!)... Or would my normal LG TV be able to pick up that signal?? It's quite old but does have a Digital tuner?
C. Anyone got a recommendation for someone in Newlands area of CT who can just fix this all for me :)

I ask because I've tried OVHD using an old DSTV dish and wiring (worked for a bit, but now often getting bad signal). Rather than completely ripping it out and starting again, I'm tempted to get one of the combined DVBT2 and OVHD boxes (e.g. https://www.takealot.com/amo-combo-digital-tv-decoder-dvbt2-s2/PLID55067292) - and then I'd have BOTH signals so as soon as one is bad, can use the other!

(I want low hassle as it's actually for my tenant not for me -- I just stream!)

Quite a few years back Sentech said they already had 85% of the country DVB ready, and remember the UHF and VHF analogue signals will be shut down at some stage. They have to really install DVB2 in most of the country.

The local TV channels are not encrypted. They spoke for years about, but thankfully never happened. The GoTV (mini-DStv) channels are encrypted with their own encryption, but the SABC and etv stuff is clear.

Whether Digital on your TV means DVBT or DVBT2 I can not tell you, but my old Samsung I got around 5 years ago and it had it. Maybe Google your model number and see what comes up.

So how do I know if Newlands in CT is covered or not? And if so by what signal and from where?
 
Okay great. So i should bother getting an aerial...

So whats a good one :)

Will check up on whether my TV already has DVB-T2

I have the AMO box and it's really just an el cheapo generic Chinese box, the remote control is particularly shite. The two multiplexes can also be a bit unreliable.

I'd spend the money having the dish aligned and carry on with OpenView or DStv EasyView.
 
The current OVHD box we have is also el cheapo - one of those R499 ones!

You might be right. Dish alignment here we come!
