Hi friends,

So my mom says she wants a tablet with skype and solitaire. Yeah.

Should I look at the MSI range (If so, which?) or what would be the better ones to look at. I'm looking at something slightly bigger than the ipad mini ... obviously not ipad price range...and an ok'ish front facing webcam/mic.

I don't really have a budget, but I'm keen to hear which brands/models to look at when I do my pricing.

Cheers

What is your price range?

I've worked on an MSI before and it is pretty crap (the one I used anyway).

I might be selling my iPad 2 in the coming weeks depending on whether or not my new tablet does the job. So if you are still looking in three weeks time drop me a PM.

If your mom is looking for something simple like Skype and Solitaire, then probably go down the 2nd hand iPad route rather than an Android tablet....

Got my mother a Samsung galaxy tab2 10", over a year ago, she likes it a lot. Though she seems to like using it to take pictures too, so I usually tend to hide when she rips that puppy out.
I'm actually against Samsung now-a-days, since I had some bad luck with the S4.

If you're looking for cheaper, I would recommend the Lenovo A3000 7". Got dual sim slots too, so you can use it for data. Saw it on special for under R2000. I personally have one.
Or check out the Lenovo S6000 too.

Cheers thanks, I'll have a look into it.

If I get her one I'll buy new. I won't look at the 2nd hand market, but thanks for offering to everyone who has ones for sale.

Google Nexus 7!

Kalahari has it on special for 2k, I have one and recommend it!

This.

Also go to the orange store and see what they have (lots of tablets for sale)

Weird, I was looking at the same one for my mom but found that the Lenovo A3500 has the same specs but only 8GB storage, but that's perfect for her. DionWired has it for R1700.

The 2012 nexus 3G was in the latest HW deals thread for 2k. Seems like a solid deal for someone not dead set on getting the latest greatest.

Glad I found this thread, need to buy a tablet for MIL as well so she can keep in touch via Facebook and FB messenger (no whatsapp on tablet?).

Either buy one of these for R2k and use a MTN data SIM I have if 500Mb for R39 or rather buy a tablet with a data plan? Any specials you've seen recently? Will go to the shops in the next couple of weeks to check as well

Asus Transformer pad. Got my mom this for skype with my sis in the UK. 16hr battery life when docked, no need to prop it up & keyboard & touchpad :D

Wasn't cheap when i bought it a year ago, but a lot better than the laptop she had

You can load whatsapp on an android tablet manually as long the tablet has the ability to send and receive sms - it must have a sim inserted.

Bought Lenovo A3000 7" 3G and wifi 16GB. Hope it does the trick. From kalahari for R1799 courier included

Got my mom a Surface RT when they came out. Skype for family abroad. Live tiles for her fave websites and news. Plus it has a USB port to plug in external HDD / flash drive for movies. She loves it.

With WinRT now free for <$200 tablets, a whole raft of RT devices is coming by year end.
