Soccer vs rugby

Soccer is a fraud to me. The amount of injury faking and simple immature lies that happen on the field is not even funny. Watching for 90 minutes without a goal? Not fun to watch.

I have yet to see a man playing soccer.

Rugby is a tiny tiny sport compared to football. Virtually every nation on earth has got football as their favourite sport. GO figure...

Also it depends who is playing. You can't compare local football to local rugby. Local rugby is at the top 3 whereas local football is somewhere near the bottom half in the world ranking.
Watch Spain or Barcelona playing and you'll understand why they call football the most beautiful game of them all.
Some teams tend to just play to avoid defeat and that's when football can be very boring.

On the question of overpayed players...actually those are household names that bring the bulk of revenue into the game...***a, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Messi, Backham, Zidane, Maradona, Pele, etc. all deserve(d) the dough they got paid.

Im sorry but i dont agree with the crazy amounts they are paid.

Why i think soccer is huge compared to rugby. Its a simple game, any bunch of kids would be able to pick up a ball an kick it around. Rugbys rules are complex, you need grass to play and not many people like the whole physical nature.

tons and tons of ppl drink black label....go figure..... just because more ppl watch and play doesnt instantly make it "better"
Dude, they dont deserve the salaries...money ruins sport..period.

I still see rugby as more of a team sport. There are moments of individual brilliance, but those 15 guys are putting there bodies on the line for 80 minutes. On the other hand Darren, football is usually about individual brilliance, "over-paid gods gift to man" players and theatrics. I do enjoy the odd international of footy, as its awesome watching guys play for their country. But all the premierships and club games just aren't my cup of tea. I loved rugby because guys played with passion, but now all these overseas clubs are paying top money for players, its going the same way as footy.

This is a point that many people seem to overlook. Rugby is to the professional sporting world. Sad as I think it is, in 20 years time most top players are likely to play in Europe. Test matches will be gone, and internationals will be friendlies. Only the World Cup will really count for international teams. Players will concentrate on their club teams.

The warning signs are there already, the Wales vs SA 'test' was advertised as a friendly. Understrength international teams. No inbound tour next year. SA, NZ and Aus players all going to Europe. The theatrics have started in rugby too. The bloodgate saga was only the first.

What was funny is the fact that I was enjoying the WC2010 final, since there was actually some action going on. When the guy does deserve a red card (flying kick to stomach), he gets a yellow. When the players ask the referee to card another player he should just slap them in the face (picture puyol crying here).

The thing is, the disrepect for officals isn't only in football. Look at what happens in baseball in the USA. Those guys really abuse the umpires. As rugby becomes properly professional, the referees will probably come in for abuse too.

Road runnnig is probably the simplest form of sport but it ain't huge. :D

Which sport is better? My opinion: after watching my first rugby game ever I think rugby is quite boring. The rules need to be simplified more and they should get rid of the pile ups that slow the game down. If they do this rugby will probably win more hearts around the world. It appears that rugby is more about size than about skill and the fans aren't as passionate as soccer fans.

I mean seriously? Not even the most dedicated football lover I know will ever say Rugby is borring ;) It's like saying swimming is more entertaining that Boxing.....
2 Completely different sports each with it's own pro's and con's but you can never say Rugby is borring.

Play both and out of the 2 I prefer rugby in all regards, you are more involved in the game even if you don't touch the ball. The physicality of it is awesome, a real testo-booster. In terms of running its a lot harder, rugby is mainly made of short sprints then contact then another short sprint etc where as soccer is quite a bit of jogging and walking and you only really sprint on a few occasions ( not saying its easy, you cover a lot of distance, its just easier) and in terms of entertainment there is always the possibility of a break or a brilliant backline move or a great set piece or turn over that can happen anywhere on the field at anytime. The only real drama in soccer comes when you with in +- 20m of the goals and there is a possibility of something.

Football - A game for gentlemen played by thugs

Rugby - A game for thugs played by gentlemen

Admittedly a UK definition.

In the UK:

Most Grammar and Public schools play Rugby.

Comprehensive and secondary schools play football.

I know a lot of people who think rugby is boring... granted not many of them are in SA, but they do exist.

I'm surprised that some people said that there's no real individual skill in rugby. Anyone who thinks that does not know rugby all that well. One player makes a huge difference. A loss can come down to one player missing a tackle. Or a win to one person making a clean break. Different players bring different strengths and weaknesses to the game. And often it depends on the players as to what kind of strategy should be played.

Rugby is complex. Not only in the rules but the way it's played these days. I prefer rugby over soccer. I do like soccer however and during the World Cup I won the Sports Picks prediction competition. But rugby just has more to it. In my personal opinion of course. :)
