Why do you say it will be a cock up exactly?

We hosted the ipl with 3 weeks notice, we are doing just fine in the confed cup so your comment is nothing more than stupid negativity as is the way with SA's.
 
Looking at the way stadiums are not being filled, it seems like this whole confed cup and world cup is going to cost us more than it will bring in.

The only people who benefitted are the companies with the big contracts to build the stadiums. The man in the street has so far benefitted nothing.

Add to this the fact that the man in the street can't even use World Cup branding on their products without a big licence fee it becomes a loose loose situation. They should at least life the licencing requirements and allow sustainable little businesses to pop up. TIA not europe where everyone can afford licencing fees.
 
Well metal confed cups do not normally have full stadiums for all the games purely because not many people travel to support their teams in the confed cups.

The world cup will be different and there will many many more fans from all over the world. A few of the games have been packed and the fan make a huge noise.Remember also times are tough and not many people have the money at the moment to go watch the footie and fifa should give free tickets away which is what i think they are going to do.People are not going to part with their money to watch games like iraq vs NZ.

I am not sure you understand how massive the world cup is and how many people are going to come to SA, the confed cup is a nothing tournament but the world cup will be massive man.

Well I did hear an interesting debate on Cape Talk where some lady from constantia I think called in and said that a company called international brands controls access to the rights to use world cup marketing. She even said how it would be better if in the african context they relax control over the branding because we have a large arts and craft market here which could benefit a lot. I think she had a point and she seemed to be very knowledgeable about the matter.

Ultimately only big business will benefit, the poor guy in the street won't really benefit as much. Sure there is opportunity to sell a lot of boerewors rolls on the corner, but it won't be sustainable. I have spoken to people who have had the worldcup in their countries and they feel we are just not ready for it nor are we ready to carry white elephant stadiums. 2014 might have been better for us.

Well for one thing even Mr. Septic Bladder is having doubts. But the majority of SA's will simply see this as an opportunity to run amock, (more so than they do on a daily basis) The airports can't cope now on a quiet midweek day. The transport system here is virtually non-existant. Escom is hardly reliable. The SABC is in a shambles, Accommodation is scarce, inferior and scattered. Service is way below standard. The host team is a joke. But I don't want to bore you with facts. So just bear in mind what I said in the first post when the sh1te hits the fan. One thing you are right about though, it will be huge!
 
Don't forget the dangerous tourists. Apparently there has been some study done that shows that criminals from overseas come to events like world cups to prey on unsuspecting locals and other tourists.

Its not something that gets mentioned much in SA because we are so busy looking at our own people suspiciously, to not notice the eastern block guy pick pocketing us, because he looks decent.

Exactly! and when those European 'sokka' hooligans arrive and find their luggage has been pilfered or totally lost, their conneting flight has been cancelled, The trasport to tha stadium has left, there is no record of their accommodation booking. They will burn the airport down, which will make it even more difficult for the next load of tourists who arrive.:eek:

Lol I am referring to the eastern block countries, the people are really poor there. Most people in SA would have their guard down if a white guy approaches them or is seen around their luggage and they prey on that fact or so I am told.

Why should they? They aren't giving FIFA 3.2 billion dollars.
Significant efforts are being made to involve smaller businesses whether its stadia or PVA's or general host city services which FIFA do NOT control.

On the other hand these opportunities don't arrive in your post box in an envelope reading "2010 benefits". Companies/SMME's need to tender, get involved, discuss, debate.

Yes there is an exclusion zone and branding restrictions but this applies only the area around the stadium for 1km. The fan mile in Cape Town is already 2.5km from the city to the stadium, so its not all doom and gloom.

Tshwane has already had 2 conferences for SMME's, Cape Town has various forums where businesses can become involved.Then theres the hundreds of tenders which are linked to 2010 preparations not directly linked to tourists or trading outside the venue.

Very ignorant to say only big business's will benefit from 2010. One must know the rules of economics to know there is a butterfly effect of wealth when these events are hosted. Even Thabo in the street will benefit. Do you want me to go into it? I'm hungover still at the moment
 
I can't wait for 2010. Will there incidents of criminal activity? Of course, this is the case whenever an event of this magnitude happens. However, SA know the world are watching and they can't afford to miss their mark so they will go out of their way to try and avoid incident. SA will be a good place to live for those weeks. :D
