Hey guys,

Thinking of getting a sodastream machine to make sparkling water. Just wondered how similar it tasted to shop bought sparkling water?

Does the fizz stay in as long?

Which model do you recommend?

Not stressed on the syrups, become addicted to sparkling water. Would u say it's worth it.

I have a SodaStream. The one with a 60L cylinder and 1Litre bottles lasts about a month if you make 1 bottle a day (1 Litre).

Tastes the same as the shop bought stuff. Obviously the quality of the water you use will determine the overall taste. If you you use tap water and the water tastes strange so will the SodaStream water. I have not been as extravagant to use bottled water yet :)

I find it is getting a bit expensive now as you are paying +/- R 120 a 60L refill. Makes about 30-35L of soda water for R 120.00 ... works out to about R 4.00 a litre.

What I do is when I see Soda Water on special (Pick n Pay brand, Jive etc) for R 9 - R 10 I buy some of those as a backup when the gas cyclinder has no more gas.

The 60L Cylinder contains about 400g of CO2 which for R 120 is damn expensive.

I have seen adapters to use paintball cylinders instead for sale in the states for about R 600 ex delivery and customs. You can apparently then fill the bottle from a paintball cyliner refill place which I believe is much cheaper.

Google 'sodastream refill adapter' for your options.

Depends on the quality of your tap water....

Personally think that the Soda Stream syrups are a rip!

The SodaStream Syrups are a total rip off. I use the Pick n Pay Kola Tonic, their Lime Juice, Cream Soda dna Rasberry syrups. Also use Oros Orange and Oros Naartjie. Massive savings compared to SodaScam

Coincidence: I was also wondering about a Sodastream to generate sparkling water ... I'm not at all interested in the flavourings

I recall seeing A similar device from one of my suppliers, not sodastream, but some other device....think it might have been from NuWorld....will check when I have time...

The ordinary syrup is full of artificial sweeteners and things.

The gas makes large bubbles and it's hard to get it right. Nothing like the commercial bubbles, which are softer and smaller.

I've seen this in Makro, but there are NO replacements for their syrups (look better than Sodastream).
They specialise in gassing a bigger bottle with little CO2's like the paintball guns use. All more expensive to buy IMO.
