Software to limit download speeds

Hi Forum,

My Roommate has been a real nuisance abusing the line 24/7 with his torrent downloads.
Now we have a 1 meg line so I say 50/50 is fair. I'm really tired of the non stop downloading and
want to put a limit to what he does. Sure I could ask him but this would get draining everyday!

Is there a software or possible script that I could put on his pc that will allow his network card to max
download 50 kbps? He also has no firewall or av so the amount of spyware killing the line must be incredible :(

Have you asked him to limit his download speeds during the day? He can implement a download schedule on something like uTorrent or Free Download Manager and that will free up bandwidth during the day for other activities. Limiting his speed from the network port is actually pretty difficult and would be an invasion of privacy.
 
I can point you to an ISP that don't allow torrent to dl more than 0.5 -1kB/s during the day till late night.

Even if you limit the download speed on his PC, the constant downloading & uploading would wreak havoc on your latencey (or ping if you prefer) and your overall net experience would be K@K.

Rather go for the download scheduler and let him download during times with low usage eg. when you guys are sleeping or not at home.
 
I don't know If this will work but some routers has a setting where you can limit the max upload and download rate based on MAC address..
 
I've had issues with NetLimiter on Windows 8. I'm using Netbalancer 6 Pro now. It's not as good as NetLimiter, but at least it works (usually) on Windows 8.
 
NetLimiter doesn't work at all for me, on Windows 8.... it ceases to respond after around 1 hour - CPU% skyrockets and I have to force-close it.
 
Check if your router has a QoS setting so you can limit download speed.
 
OP- who's covering the cost of the line? Is it split? [-]And have you discussed this with him?[/-] Nevermind. However you should.

I think that the best bet would be to agree a usage schedule for the line, where you are each limited to the usage of the line. Doing something behind his back may lead to further conflict.

1. Ask him nicely to be considerate. When that fails.
2. Get your own separate line put in.
