i have the HTC magic, running Android 1.5. is it possible to upgrade it to the latest version of Android? if so, what is the procedure?

I Have updated to the latest sense software (same as the Hero). You can download it from www.leaf.co.za website with full instructions. I am not sure about upgrading Android itself.

Both HTC and Leaf do not provide updates for their older phones, they rather prefer you spend another couple of thousand rands buying a new one.

Your best option would be to flash a new version of Android on yourself. Here is a brilliant custom build: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/home/cyanogenmod-5-0-8-has-landed

The biggest problem is rooting your phone, so best would be to ask them for some help :D

The update that leaf provides is still version 1.5, altough it still runs very fast, it also has HTC Sense UI which is quite awesome.

I must be honest, since loading the updated phone software from leaf, I havnt felt the need to update to 2.1. Although I now need to, as there are a few apps that only work with 2.x, which is quite irritating...

Im not sure what the hold up is... As far as I understand the CPU is "similar" as in its the same type of CPU, just the newer ones are faster.

I believe the holdup is the drivers for the device, eg. bluetooth, camera, touch, ball, etc etc. Its like moving from XP to 7 and then needing new drivers, you need to wait for the different manufactures to release driver updates.

As HTC does not actually make all the parts that go into there phones, they rely on others to manufacture parts to there specifications. I think this can lead to a delay.

What I dont understand is, why there isnt a compatibility that is builtin to the new version of android that will accept the drivers of device, letting the device run the latest OS, but have legacy drivers.

Obviously as i dont work for HTC or leaf, this is completely hearsay, and is what I think about the whole subject.

In the end I just want to be able to have a decent lifespan of my phone, as my phone is not even a year old, and im already being told that they are not going to release an update for it, and when I say update, I mean actually change the version... eg. 1.5 update to 1.6, or 1.5 update to 2.1.1

I cant believe that HTC will not support old phones, as people will not buy android if they will not receive updates after 1 year.

A phones lifespan should at least be 2 years active support with updates, and even possibly 3-4 years of intermediate software support.

The HTC Magic will be updated to a newer platform later at some point this year. We're discussing this with Google at the moment and will let customers know as soon as an upgrade rollout date has been set. To clarify, you may also have seen reports that HTC that it will be updating all Android handsets to version 2.1 in the near future.

This only applies to HTC branded handsets (basically any without the word "Google" printed on the casing) in the US at the moment, although as soon as we get any information on if this will happen for UK HTC Android devices, we will let you know. With this in mind, please don't press us for updates or timescales, as there's simply no information for us to provide. As soon as we find out, we'll update you all.

I'm closing this thread now, and we'll simply close any other threads and repeat this message until there's any more information for us to provide.

Thanks
